Chapter 6 - The Golden Crust

Six months later.
The early morning sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the expanded Rosalie’s Cornflower Bakery.
The space was three times its original size, featuring exposed brick walls, warm oak tables, a glowing stone oven built into the back wall, and a long marble display case filled with fresh breads, pastries, and delicate tarts.
Outside on the sidewalk, a line of eager customers stretched down the block, waiting for the doors to open at 5:00 AM.
Inside the kitchen, the air was warm, rich with the irresistible scent of fresh yeast, roasted pecans, and sweet vanilla.
Emily stood at the central wooden prep table, her hands covered in flour as she shaped a long braid of sweet brioche dough.
Beside her stood Matteo.
He wore a simple black apron over a gray t-shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular forearms as he lifted a heavy fifty-pound sack of organic wheat flour onto the storage shelf. He moved with effortless strength, his breathing calm, his face relaxed and full of quiet contentment.
"That's the last sack," Matteo said, wiping his brow with the back of his arm as he stepped up behind Emily.
He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back lightly against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder as he watched her hands work the dough.
"You're getting faster at braiding," Emily murmured, leaning back into his warm embrace, a soft sigh of complete happiness escaping her lips.
"I have a very strict teacher," Matteo whispered into her ear, his breath warm against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine.
From the dining area out front, the front door unlocked, and Sofia walked in carrying a stack of fresh white linen napkins. She looked around the bright, bustling shop, then peeked her head into the kitchen, a bright smirk on her face.
"Are you two going to bake bread today," Sofia called out playfully, "or are you just going to stand there looking like a romantic movie poster? The line outside is down to the corner!"
Emily laughed, turning around in Matteo’s arms. She reached up, placing her hands on his chest, her fingers tangling in the soft fabric of his shirt.
"You heard the boss," Emily said, her brown eyes sparkling with endless affection. "We have customers waiting."
Matteo didn't move away. Instead, his hands tightened gently around her waist, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them.
"Let them wait five minutes," Matteo whispered softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a depth of love that made the rest of the world vanish entirely.
He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, warm, tender kiss that tasted of sweet sugar and clean, fresh morning air.
When he finally pulled back, Emily leaned her forehead against his, her hands resting over his steady, beating heart.
The fear, the violence, and the dark legacy of the past were gone, replaced by the simple, beautiful life they had built together from the ground up.

The bell above the bakery door chimed, announcing the start of another beautiful morning.
And as the first customers walked through the door into the warm, fragrant light of the shop, Matteo Vescari held Emily’s hand in his, completely home, completely free, and forever hers.
