Chapter 8 - Confronting the Past

Chaos descended upon the Russo estate in a matter of seconds. The deep, mournful wail of the security sirens echoed through the cavernous hallways, mixing with the heavy thud of running boots as armed guards deployed to their defensive positions.
Victor grabbed a sleek, matte-black firearm from a concealed wall safe behind his desk, checking the clip with swift, mechanical precision before tucking it into a shoulder holster. He grabbed my wrist, his grip firm, grounding, and utterly unyielding.
"Stay right behind me, Chloe," Victor commanded, his voice brooking no argument. "Do not let go of my hand, no matter what you hear."
"Where are we going?" I asked, my heart pounding in my ears as he pulled me out of the study and into the darkened second-floor hallway.
"My private panic room," Victor said tersely, navigating the labyrinthine corridors with absolute familiarity. "Vance thinks he can send a message by hitting my home? He's about to find out why no one crosses Victor Russo and lives to tell the story."
As we descended a narrow, hidden staircase behind the library, the dull, concussive thud of a muffled explosion echoed from the front gates. The entire mansion seemed to shudder, dust raining down from the high plaster ceilings.
I gasped, stumbling over my own feet, but Victor caught me effortlessly, sweeping me up against his side as we hurried down into the fortified concrete sub-level below the estate.
The panic room was a stark contrast to the luxurious opulence of the rest of the house—a reinforced steel bunker equipped with monitors, communication arrays, and emergency supplies. Marcus was already inside, tapping furiously at a bank of security screens showing real-time camera feeds from across the property.
"Status!" Victor barked, setting me down gently near a reinforced steel table.
"They breached the outer gate with a reinforced truck, sir," Marcus reported, his eyes darting across the monitors. "Three vehicles. Twelve armed men. They’re trying to force the front conservatory doors. Our perimeter guard team has engaged them, but they're pushing hard."
On the main monitor, I watched with wide, terrified eyes as shadowy figures in tactical gear swarmed the immaculate front lawns of the estate, firing automatic weapons toward the fortified windows. Glass shattered in the grand foyer, the sound of breaking crystal echoing through the intercom system.
This was the brutal reality of Victor’s world—a world of violence, blood, and constant war. For a second, a wave of cold terror washed over me. What was I doing here? I was a diner waitress, a broke sister trying to pay hospital bills. I didn't belong in the crossfire of a mob war.
Victor must have seen the fear flicker across my face. He stepped closer, placing both hands firmly on my shoulders, forcing me to look away from the screens and directly into his eyes.
"Listen to me, Chloe," Victor said, his voice fierce, steady, and filled with an absolute, terrifying certainty. "Nothing is going to happen to you. I built this empire to protect what's mine, and from the moment I found you sleeping in my bed, you became mine. Do you understand?"
The possessive intensity of his words sent a shiver straight down my spine, but underneath the fear, a strange, fierce warmth bloomed in my chest. He wasn't just protecting me; he was anchoring me in the middle of a storm.
May you like
"I understand," I whispered, my hands coming up to rest against his chest, feeling the steady, heavy thud of his heart beneath his shirt.
Victor turned back to Marcus with a cold, deadly smile. "Let them through the conservatory doors. Spring the interior trap."
