Chapter 2 - THE AUDIT IN THE SHADOWS

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the hospital room was flooded with pale winter sunlight.
The door pushed open, and Eric walked in, carrying a lukewarm paper cup of coffee. He was wearing the same designer shirt he had worn to the baby shower—the one he had complained about the paramedics cutting near the cuff.
He looked at me sitting upright in bed, my hair pulled back, my laptop resting comfortably on my knees.
His eyes widened in instant shock. His hand froze on the coffee cup.
"Where... where did you get that computer?" Eric stammered, stepping into the room and quickly closing the door behind him. "I thought your purse was lost at the venue!"
"I keep three encrypted backups of my work systems, Eric," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and completely devoid of emotion. "A good accountant never relies on a single device."
Eric’s jaw tightened. He quickly shifted into his familiar pattern of emotional manipulation, stepping toward the bed with a performative frown of concern.
"Maya, babe, look... yesterday was a total misunderstanding," he began, reaching out to grab my hand.
I pulled my hand away before his fingers could touch my skin.
"Don't touch me," I said flatly.
Eric’s warm expression vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, defensive scowl. "Oh, come on! Are we really doing this right now?! Our daughter is in the ICU, and you're sitting here holding a grudge over money?!"
"That money was meant to pay for her private specialist care, Eric," I reminded him, looking him straight in the eyes. "Care she now needs because your mother pushed me into a pool."
"Nobody pushed you!" Eric shouted, dropping his coffee cup onto the bedside tray. "You slipped! My family was trying to help Mom! She was facing eviction! You have hundreds of thousands of dollars tucked away in your little internet accounts, Maya! You're selfish!"
"Your mother isn't being evicted, Eric," I said softly.
He froze. "What?"
I turned my laptop screen toward him.
Spread across the 15-inch display was a high-resolution property deed, a tax assessment map, and a certified bank statement from the county clerk's office.
"Diane owns her suburban home outright. She paid off the mortgage three years ago," I explained, scrolling through the documents with cold precision. "Furthermore, she owns two rental properties in upstate New York that generate eleven thousand dollars a month in net income. She wasn't being evicted. She was buying a third vacation property in South Carolina, and you gave her my delivery fund to cover her down payment deposit."
Eric’s face drained of every drop of color. He stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"How... how did you get those records?" he whispered.
"I am a forensic accountant, Eric," I said, leaning forward despite the dull ache in my surgical incision. "Public records, property deeds, and corporate registries are my playground. You thought I was a foolish housewife playing on a laptop. The reality is, I know more about your family's finances than you do."
"Maya, listen to me—"
"No, Eric, you listen to me," I interrupted, my voice dropping into an icy, lethal register. "At 8:00 AM today, my attorney filed an emergency ex-parte petition with the family court. Every single joint account tied to our marriage has been frozen. Your mother’s bank accounts have been flagged for judicial review. And your employer, Vance Construction, received a formal subpoena for your corporate expense logs thirty minutes ago."
Eric took two frantic steps backward, his hands trembling as he pulled his phone from his pocket. He tapped the screen frantically, trying to log into his banking app.
ACCOUNT ACCESS RESTRICTED: CONTACT JUDICIAL RECEIVER.
"You crazy bitch!" Eric screamed, his composure shattering into pure panic. "You ruined my life! My boss is going to fire me!"
"Your boss isn't just going to fire you, Eric," I said, closing my laptop with a quiet, decisive snap. "He's going to prosecute you. Now get out of my room before I have security arrest you for domestic assault."
May you like
The door flew open, and two burly hospital security guards stepped into the room, their hands resting on their belts.
Eric looked at the guards, then at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of rage, terror, and humiliation. He backed out of the room without another word, his hasty footsteps echoing down the hallway as he fled into the cold morning air.
