Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Execution

At 10:00 AM on Friday morning, the top-floor executive boardroom of Vance Logistics in downtown Charlotte was filled with twenty-four high-ranking board members, corporate shareholders, and legal representatives.
Richard Vance sat at the head of the long glass conference table, wearing a dark gray suit, looking confident and triumphant. Beside him sat Eleanor Vance, wearing a black lace dress, dabbing her eyes with a silk handkerchief for the benefit of the press representatives sitting near the back.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Richard announced, standing up and pressing his hands against the polished table. "We are gathered here today under tragic and difficult circumstances. As you know, my brother, CEO Julian Vance, has been struggling with severe mental instability and emotional exhaustion following the tragic passing of his wife."
Nodders of sympathy rippled through the older board members.
"Furthermore," Richard continued smoothly, pointing to a slide presentation on the wall screen, "an internal preliminary audit reveals a twenty-million-dollar discrepancy in our overseas shipping accounts—accounts managed exclusively under Julian’s digital signature. In light of these tragic events, Mother and I are moving a motion to remove Julian as CEO and appoint myself as interim Chairman."
"I second the motion!" Eleanor declared loudly.
"Before we vote," a loud, authoritative voice echoed from the heavy double doors at the back of the room. "I believe the board deserves to see the complete audit."
The room went dead silent.
I stepped through the doors. I was dressed in a sharp, tailored black tuxedo suit, my hair neatly combed, holding a silver leather briefcase.
Walking right beside me was Nora Bell, holding a secure tablet, dressed in a professional navy business suit.
And behind us stepped four federal agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance (no relation), along with two uniformed officers.
Richard’s face paled instantly. "Julian? What is the meaning of bringing federal agents into a private board meeting?!"
"I'm not here for a board meeting, Richard," I said smoothly, walking down the center aisle of the conference room until I stood directly across from him at the table. "I'm here for a confession."
I set my briefcase on the glass table, opened it, and pulled out a high-powered digital transmitter, connecting it directly to the boardroom’s main media console.
"Three hours ago," I addressed the entire board, "the FBI executed a federal search warrant on Richard Vance’s private residence and the offshore accounts registered to Vance Logistics in Panama."
"This is outrage!" Eleanor shrieked, standing up. "Julian, how dare you publicly attack your own family!"
"Let's listen to family, Mother," I said, pressing play on the media console remote.
The recorded phone call between Richard and Eleanor played through the surround-sound speakers of the boardroom.
> Richard’s Voice: "The mechanic in Asheville is ready. The brake lines on her SUV will fail on the steep descent near Black Mountain. It will look like a tragic mountain accident."
Gasps of horror and cries of outrage erupted across the entire room. Board members stood up in shock, pointing fingers at Richard and Eleanor.
"THAT'S A FAKE!" Richard screamed, his face twisting into a hideous mask of terror and rage. "IT'S AN AI VOICE GENERATION! HE FABRICATED IT!"
"The digital signature on the audio file was verified by federal forensic experts two hours ago, Mr. Vance," Special Agent Marcus stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Along with the wire transfers you sent to the mechanic in Asheville three days before Mrs. Clara Vance’s death."
Eleanor collapsed back into her chair, hyperventilating wildly as female agents approached her.
Richard made a desperate run for the side executive exit, but two federal agents tackled him to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"JULIAN!" Richard screamed, struggling on the carpet, his face pressed against the floor. "I AM YOUR BROTHER! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!"
I walked over, looking down at the man who had murdered my wife and tried to steal my children.
"You aren't my brother," I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely unyielding. "You're a murderer. And you are going to spend the rest of your life in a federal prison."
As the agents dragged Richard and Eleanor out of the boardroom in handcuffs before flashing press cameras, thunderous applause broke out among the remaining board members.

I stood at the head of the room, taking a long, deep breath. The suffocating weight that had crushed my chest for fourteen months finally vanished.
Justice had been served.
