Chapter 3 - Smoke and Shadows

The heat inside the garage spiked instantly. Black, acrid smoke began billowing toward the ceiling, choking the air and stinging our eyes.

“MAYA! COVER YOUR MOUTH!” Clara shouted, stripping off her canvas jacket and attempting to beat back the advancing line of fire near the fuel drums.

“It’s no use!” I yelled, grabbing her arm and pulling her back. “That’s racing gasoline! It’s going to ignite the main tanks in less than two minutes!”

Maya didn't panic. She pulled a small emergency respirator mask from her backpack—sized specifically for a child—and strapped it securely over her face. She then pulled a second, adult-sized mask from the case and shoved it into her mother’s hands.

“Under the lift! NOW!” Clara commanded.

I grabbed the Remington shotgun from Clara’s hands, racked another slug into the chamber, and provided cover while Clara lifted the heavy trapdoor.

“Get in!” I ordered.

“Not without you!” Clara demanded, her hand gripping my wrist with fierce strength.

“I have to draw their fire!” I shouted back through the thick smoke. “If we all hide in a hole under a burning building, we’ll suffocate! They think we’re going to break through the front doors. I’m going to make them think I’m escaping alone through the side ventilation shaft.”

Clara looked at me, her eyes filled with a chaotic mixture of panic and reawakened affection. “Adrian... don't you dare die on us now. You just found out she exists.”

I looked down at Maya. The little girl reached out her small hand, her fingers wrapping around my gloved thumb.

“Don't get hit, Daddy,” she said softly through her respirator mask.

The word Daddy hit my heart like a physical impact, shattering the last lingering coldness of my mob-boss persona. I had spent my entire adult life ruling through fear, solitude, and distrust. But standing in a burning room, hearing that tiny voice call me father, I knew I would tear the world apart to keep them safe.

“I won't,” I swore to her. “I promise.”

I forced the trapdoor shut, engaging the heavy latch from the outside, and kicked a steel tool chest over the door to conceal it from view.

Taking a deep breath of the rapidly thinning air, I dropped low to the ground and crawled toward the side utility door near the air compressor.

Through the roaring sound of the flames, I could hear footfalls on the gravel outside. Two shooters were moving toward the side entrance, waiting to pick off anyone fleeing the fire.

I waited until the shadow of the first gunman crossed the frosted glass of the utility door.

BOOM!

I fired the 12-gauge slug directly through the wooden panel. The heavy projectile blasted through the door, striking the gunman in the chest and sending his body flying backward into the brush.

Before the second gunman could react, I kicked the shattered door off its hinges, rolled onto the gravel outside, and fired a second shot upward. The slug caught the shooter in the shoulder, dropping him to the ground with a cry of agony.

I sprang to my feet, my Kimber in my right hand and the shotgun in my left, advancing through the rolling black smoke like a phantom rising from the fire.

Dominic was fifty yards away near the tree line, standing beside the damaged Lincoln. His eyes widened in shock as he saw me emerge from the inferno alone, unyielding and terrifyingly alive.

“Where are they?!” Dominic screamed, pulling his own weapon.

“They’re beyond your reach,” I roared, dropping the empty shotgun and bringing my Kimber up with both hands.

I squeezed the trigger three times in rapid succession.

The bullets punched through the Lincoln’s windshield, missing Dominic’s head by inches and shattering the glass into a million spiderwebs. Dominic dove into the dense woods behind the vehicle, scrambling for cover as the engine of his Lincoln caught fire from the burning garage debris.

Behind me, the roof of Clara’s auto shop collapsed in a magnificent explosion of sparks and roaring flames, sealing the garage off in a wall of fire.

From down the mountain road, the sound of multiple heavy engines echoed through the valley. Three sets of headlights cut through the gathering twilight.

Julian’s reinforcement squad had arrived.

I backed slowly into the thick treeline on the opposite side of the road, keeping my weapon raised. I was out of ammunition for the shotgun, down to four rounds in my pistol, and alone in the woods against an army of my own family’s mercenaries.

But as I looked back toward the burning ruin of the shop, knowing Clara and Maya were safe in the concrete bunker beneath the earth, a dark, victorious smile spread across my face.

They thought they were hunting a stranded boss.

They didn't know they had just awakened the father.
