Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

"Wait! No! You don't understand!" Ethan shrieked as the federal agent grabbed his wrists, pulling them firmly behind his back. The metallic CLICK of the handcuffs echoed through the silent conference room like a gunshot.

"Claire! Tell them to stop!" Ethan pleaded frantically, turning his wet, terrified face toward me as he was forced down into the chair. "I did this for us! I did it for our future!"

"For us?" I asked, pulling my phone from my coat pocket and opening the live security archive from Tuesday night. I turned the screen toward his face.

On the high-definition display, Lauren Shaw was standing in my hallway, wearing my camel coat, drinking my mother’s wine, while Ethan kissed her cheek.

"Is Lauren part of 'us', Ethan?" I asked quietly. "Or was she just helping you pack my mother's first editions into the back of your getaway van?"

Ethan stared at the glowing phone screen, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. His entire carefully constructed web of lies collapsed into dust right before his eyes.

Across the street, two police cruisers pulled up behind the black SUV where Lauren Shaw was waiting with the idling engine. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the bank, we watched as officers surrounded the vehicle, pulling a screaming, thrashing Lauren out into the sunlight and placing her in handcuffs.

"Your offshore accounts in Delaware and Saint Barthélemy have been frozen under a federal asset preservation order," Margaret informed Ethan coolly, closing her briefcase with a sharp click. "Every dollar you stole from Claire’s family trust has been recovered. And by four o'clock today, the Birchwood property will be legally secured under an irrevocable protective order."

Ethan slumped forward against the table, sobbing hysterically as the federal agents lifted him by his arms to lead him out of the room.

As he was escorted past me, Ethan looked up one last time, his eyes wide with desperate, pitiful regret.

"Claire... please..." he whispered, his voice cracking. "I lost my mind... please don't abandon me..."

I looked at the man I had loved for ten years. I looked at his expensive suit, his polished hair, and the empty, hollow shell of a husband who had traded his soul for greed.

I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel hatred.

I only felt an overwhelming, profound sense of relief.

"You took off my bedroom light, Ethan," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "Now, I'm turning off yours."
