Chapter 10 - The Trap Snaps ShutBy the time our Uber pulled up to the front entrance of our high-rise building twenty minutes later, two marked San Diego Police cruisers were already parked out front, their red and blue lights flashing against the glass facade.

Savannah and I rushed into the lobby, flanked by Julian Ross.
The lobby was filled with residents and building staff, all staring toward the elevators.
As the elevator doors opened with a soft chime, two uniformed police officers stepped out, escorting Bernice Sterling in steel handcuffs.
Her hair was disheveled, her cardigan twisted sideways, and her face flushed with dark, furious red.
"Let go of me! You have no right!" Bernice shrieked, struggling against the officer's grip. "That is my son's apartment! I left my medication inside! My son will have you fired for this!"
Then, her eyes locked onto me standing near the glass entrance doors.
"Christopher!" she screamed, her voice cracking into an unhinged screech. "Tell them! Tell these thugs to take these cuffs off me! Your crazy wife called the cops on your own mother! Christopher!"
I walked slowly across the polished marble lobby, stopping three feet away from her.
I didn't yell. I didn't show anger. I looked at her with pure, unadulterated coldness.
"I didn't call them, Mom," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent lobby for every neighbor and guard to hear. "Detective Miller called them when you broke the court order."
"You... you traitor!" she spat, tears of pure rage streaming down her face. "I raised you! I built your life!"
"You stole $115,000 from us," I replied flatly. "We found the Nevada holding accounts, Bernice. We found the Sacramento condo papers. We know everything."
Bernice froze instantly. The furious screaming stopped. The color completely drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow, frail, and utterly exposed.
Detective Miller stepped out from the second elevator, holding a sealed evidence bag containing a heavy crowbar and a set of master lock picks the locksmith had dropped when police surprised them on the 14th floor.
"Bernice Sterling, you are under arrest for felony violation of a protective order, attempted burglary, criminal trespassing, and felony grand theft," Miller declared loudly, grabbing her arm. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the officers marched her out through the glass doors toward the waiting police car, Bernice looked back over her shoulder one last time.
She looked small. She looked defeated. She looked like the criminal she had been hiding beneath a mother's smile for three long years.
Savannah leaned against my side, placing her hand over her pregnant belly. I wrapped my arm tightly around her shoulders, holding her safe, whole, and protected.

The battle was far from over—court dates, financial recovery, and trial testimonies lay ahead—but for the first time in three years, the darkness inside our home was finally gone.
Here are Chapters 11 through 15, expanding the story through the legal fallout, hidden revelations about Savannah's father, Bernice's desperate attempts to escape state prison, and the arrival of our baby girl.
