Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Dynasty

Forty-eight hours later.
The news of Vanessa’s arrest and Julian Croft’s indictment had sent shockwaves through the financial district. Mercer Aerospace stock had dipped four percent at the opening bell, but stabilized as soon as I held an emergency press conference announcing that all stolen funds had been recovered from Zurich and that the fraudulent offshore liens had been legally voided by federal injunction.
I sat in the visitor's room of the Cook County Maximum Security Facility.
Across the thick bulletproof glass sat Arthur Sterling Sr.—Vanessa’s father.
He was sixty-five years old, with sharp silver hair, wearing a orange prison jumpsuit that looked completely alien on a man who had spent forty years in tailored Italian suits. He was currently serving a fifteen-year sentence for securities fraud, but his influence had managed to reach into my life through his daughter.
"You destroyed my daughter, Elijah," Arthur Sterling Sr. said through the intercom, his voice cold, raspy, and full of toxic arrogance.
"Your daughter destroyed herself, Arthur," I replied through the phone. "She tied an innocent woman to a column and held a lighter to her face because she couldn't find a safe key. She learned her cruelty from you."
Arthur let out a dry, rattling laugh. "Vanessa was doing what was necessary to survive. The Sterling family does not bow to middle-class ethics, Elijah. You were supposed to be our ticket out of this place. You were supposed to use your aerospace capital to buy my pardon from the governor."
I leaned closer to the glass. "Is that what this was all about? The wedding, the engagement, the fake love... it was all just a ploy to leverage my influence for a political pardon?"
"Of course it was!" Arthur sneered, slamming his fist against the ledge. "Did you really think a woman like Vanessa could love a boring, workaholic engineer who spends his weekends reading technical blueprints? You were a tool, Elijah. A wealthy, gullible tool."
I listened to his words, expecting to feel a sharp sting of pain or humiliation. But as I looked at the old, bitter man sitting in his orange jumpsuit, I felt only a profound, liberating clarity.
"Thank you, Arthur," I said softly.
Arthur blinked, caught off guard by my response. "What?"
"Thank you for showing me exactly what you are," I said, standing up from my chair. "Because of your daughter's arrogance, your entire hidden offshore network has been exposed to the Department of Justice. The prosecutors are filing asset forfeiture orders on every property your family owns in Aspen, Miami, and London tomorrow morning."
Arthur’s face went rigid. His breath caught in his throat. "What... what did you say?"
May you like
"Vanessa didn't just fail to get you out of prison, Arthur," I said as I hung up the phone. "She ensured your family will die penniless."
I turned my back on him and walked out of the visitor's center, ignoring his frantic banging against the glass behind me.
