Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF TREASON

"Wait! Thomas, please!" Victor shrieked, his hands clawing uselessly at my tactical vest as he stared down at the fifty-story drop beneath him. "It was business! Just business! I can pay you! Millions! Whatever you want!"
"You put my sixteen-year-old daughter in an ICU," I whispered, leaning in so close he could feel the ice in my breath. "You thought because I wore a uniform, I was a dog on a leash. You forgot what I do for a living."
Dax stepped forward, sliding a tablet across the bar top.
"Every single server in your company has just been wiped, Victor," Dax announced. "And every document detailing your human trafficking money laundering, fraud, and attempted murder has just been broadcast directly to the Department of Justice, the IRS, and every major news network in North America."
Victor wept hysterically. "Please... don't kill me..."
"Killing you is easy, Victor," I said, pulling him back over the ledge and throwing him onto his knees on the floor. "Living the rest of your life in a supermax federal prison as a child-abuser... that’s where the real nightmare begins."
The sound of police sirens echoed from the street below.
This time, it wasn't the local precinct. It was federal tactical teams, responding to the massive digital evidence drop Dax had just released.
I looked down at the weeping, broken man on the floor.

"If you ever so much as think my daughter's name again," I promised softly, "I won't send the FBI. I'll come back myself."
We turned around and walked out through the private elevator shaft, vanishing into the night before the federal agents breached the lobby.
