Chapter 3 - The Shadow Dynasty

By eight o'clock the following morning, the financial storm began.
I sat in the high-rise conference room of Sterling & Mercer Law Group in downtown Chicago. Across the massive oak table sat Arthur Sterling, my lead corporate attorney, along with three forensic accountants I had hired at midnight.
"Daniel," Arthur said, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier across the polished table. "We spent the last six hours pulling the audit logs on your joint accounts, your business holdings, and the family trust."
"What did you find?" I asked, sipping my black coffee.
Arthur sighed, adjusting his silver wire-rimmed glasses. "Vanessa wasn't working alone. Her mother, Evelyn Montgomery, and her brother, Chad, have been running a failing real estate development firm in Florida for the last three years. They were nearly twenty million dollars in debt to private hard-money lenders."
"And Vanessa was funding them?"
"Not just funding them," Arthur said, tapping a red line on a spreadsheet. "She was siphon-routing funds directly out of your mother’s healthcare trust fund using forged power-of-attorney documents. Over the last fourteen months, Vanessa transferred 3.8 million dollars out of your mother's accounts into an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under Chad Montgomery's name."
I stared at the numbers on the page. 3.8 million dollars. Money my father had spent thirty years accumulating to ensure my mother would have round-the-clock nursing care, physical therapy, and peace for the rest of her life.
"Can we trace it?" I asked.
"We already have," Arthur smiled grimly. "And because the wire transfers crossed state lines and involved forged signatures from an incapacitated stroke victim, it's no longer just elder abuse, Daniel. It's federal wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny."
"What about her family?"
"Her brother Chad was picked up by federal marshals at Miami International Airport two hours ago while trying to board a flight to Dubai," Arthur reported. "Her mother, Evelyn, is currently being questioned by the FBI in Naples. The entire Montgomery family was setting you up, Daniel. They intended to clear out your mother's trust, force you into a high-conflict divorce once the money was gone, and take half of your tech firm in the settlement."
A quiet knock sounded at the conference room door. Arthur’s junior associate stepped in, leaning down to whisper in Arthur’s ear before handing him a pink message slip.
Arthur looked up at me. "Vanessa’s bail hearing is set for two o'clock today at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse. Her lawyer is asking for a temporary release on bond, claiming she needs medical evaluation for 'acute emotional stress.'"

I stood up from the conference chair, buttoning my suit jacket.
"Tell the prosecutor we'll be in the front row," I said. "And make sure the judge receives a copy of the Cayman Islands wire transfers before he decides on bail."
