Chapter 4 - The Morning After

The morning sun over Greenwich offered no warmth, casting a pale, steely glare across the frozen lawns of the estate. Inside the master bedroom, Aleric Sterling sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, his clothes unwashed from the night before, staring blankly at the wall.
He hadn't slept a wink. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the signature of James Callaway on the legal filings, and the cold, unyielding gaze of his wife as she walked out of his study.
The bedroom door creaked open, and Eleanor bustled in, her silk robe rustling, a cup of freshly brewed Kona coffee in her hand.
"Aleric, really, you look dreadful," Eleanor scolded lightly, walking over to the dresser. "And where is Saraphina? The housekeeper said her car is gone, and the guest room is stripped. Is she throwing another one of her quiet little tantrums because of the baby?"
Aleric didn't move. He didn't look up at his mother.
"She’s gone, Mother," Aleric said, his voice flat, stripped of all its usual corporate arrogance.
Eleanor stopped, her coffee cup pausing halfway to her lips. "Gone? What do you mean, gone? To run errands? To visit her little downtown friends?"
"She packed her things. She took Riley. And she filed for divorce," Aleric said, finally raising his bloodshot eyes to meet his mother's. "Not a quiet, amicable divorce, Mother. A total liquidation. She’s locked down the corporate accounts. Callaway and Pierce have initiated a forensic audit of every asset we hold, including the trust funds."
The coffee cup slipped from Eleanor’s hand, shattering against the hardwood floor, dark brown liquid splashing across her designer slippers.
"Callaway and Pierce?" Eleanor gasped, her face draining of color. "That’s impossible! Those are federal litigators! They don't handle local domestic disputes! How could she possibly afford them?"
"She didn't hire them on credit, Eleanor," a calm, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the doorway.
Both Aleric and Eleanor whipped their heads around.
Standing in the doorway wasn't Saraphina, but a man they hadn't seen in years: Arthur Sterling, Aleric’s estranged uncle and senior board member of Sterling Enterprises, accompanied by two armed private security guards and a court-appointed bailiff.
"Uncle Arthur," Aleric stammered, scrambling to his feet. "What is the meaning of this? How did you get in here?"
Arthur stepped into the room, his gray suit immaculate, his expression carved out of granite. He held up a thick manila folder stamped with the seal of the New York Supreme Court.
"Saraphina called me at midnight," Arthur said coldly, looking around the opulent bedroom with deep disgust. "She showed me the paternity records for Julian. She showed me the forged financial documents you and your mother used to siphon family holdings away from the rightful heirs. And most importantly, Aleric, she showed me the court order granting her temporary receivership over your corporate voting shares."
Eleanor clutched her chest, staggering backward until she hit the edge of the vanity. "Arthur, you can't believe her! She’s an outsider! She’s trying to destroy this family!"
"No, Eleanor," Arthur said, his voice ringing out like a judge's gavel. "You and my nephew destroyed this family the moment you thought you could treat a brilliant woman like a doormat and steal an innocent child’s future. The board of directors has been convened for an emergency meeting at nine o'clock this morning. Your access cards have been deactivated. Your credit cards are frozen."
Arthur turned his piercing gaze toward Aleric.

"Pack a bag, Aleric. You're being locked out of the company effective immediately. And as for Julian..." Arthur gestured to the bailiff behind him. "Social services and a court-appointed guardian ad litem are already downstairs to take custody of the infant while the adoption fraud is investigated."
Aleric stood frozen, the walls of his entire world collapsing inward in a matter of seconds.
