Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

Guests were standing up on chairs. Phone screens were flashing everywhere as people recorded video of the blood running down my face and the financial documents displayed in my trembling hands.

"She's lying!" Richard shouted, his face turning purple as he turned to face the room, waving his hands frantically. "She's unstable! Look at her! She hit her head on the table! She's having a psychotic episode!"

"Page fourteen of the certified bank ledger, Dad!" I shouted back over the mic, tossing a folded stack of papers straight onto the table in front of Marcus Sterling. "Check the routing numbers, Marcus! The wire transfers were executed from Richard's private computer at 2:00 a.m. on October 14th using his personal security token!"

Marcus Sterling caught the papers. He pulled his reading glasses from his coat pocket, his eyes scanning the certified banking seals and transaction timestamps. Within five seconds, his jaw dropped.

He looked up at Richard with utter, unadulterated horror. "Richard... these are live Federal Reserve wire receipts. You pledged your daughter's inheritance trust to cover an offshore line of credit!"

"It was a temporary transfer!" Richard stammered, his polished corporate demeanor crumbling completely under the gaze of two hundred influential city leaders. "It was an bridge loan! The hospital project was delayed—"

"The hospital project wasn't delayed, Dad," I said, my voice cutting through his frantic excuses like an axe. "You stole six million dollars from the municipal pension fund allocated for the hospital's foundation work. The state building inspectors are issuing a shutdown order at seven o'clock tomorrow morning."

Two board members from Vance Enterprises stood up at Table 2, their faces contorted in absolute fury.

"Is this true, Richard?!" one of them screamed. "Did you use municipal bond funds for offshore shell accounts?!"

"Security! Get hotel security in here!" Victoria screamed, clutching her head, tears ruining her heavy mascara. "Get these people out! Turn off the lights!"

Before anyone could move, the double doors at the back of the ballroom were pushed open.

Four uniformed officers from the city police department, accompanied by two detectives in dark suits, stepped into the room. The lead detective—a broad-shouldered man with a silver mustache named Detective Vance Miller—scanned the chaotic ballroom until his eyes locked onto the blood streaming down my face and the silver cake stand lying on the floor at Richard's feet.

"Police! Nobody move!" Detective Miller shouted, pulling his silver badge from his coat.

A quiet, terrifying hush fell over the room once again.

Richard took a step back, his hands trembling as he looked from the police officers to the microphone in my hand.

"Detective," Richard stammered, his voice suddenly squeaky and desperate. "Thank God you're here. My daughter has suffered a head injury... she's delusional... she attacked the dessert display and fell—"

"Detective Miller," I interrupted, stepping down from the stage, holding my ground despite the dizzying spinning in my head. "My name is Eleanor Vance. I am the Senior Forensic Auditor for Vance & Associates. I called your department's Financial Crimes Division two hours ago and uploaded forty-eight gigabytes of encrypted evidence to your secure server."

Detective Miller looked down at the silver cake stand resting in a pool of blood on the white tablecloth, then back at Richard.

"We received the files, Ms. Vance," Detective Miller said, his voice flat and stern. "And we also received a 911 call five minutes ago reporting an active physical assault in this ballroom."

"She tripped!" Victoria shrieked, running over to hold Richard's arm. "She's making it up! It was an accident!"

"Look at the cake stand, Officer," I said, pointing at the heavy sterling silver base. "The fingerprints on the handle belong to my father. The blood on the edge belongs to me. And if you check the hotel's high-definition security camera mounted directly above the dessert table, you will see Richard Vance strike me in the head with it because I refused to sign over the title of my vehicle."

Detective Miller glanced up at the small black dome camera mounted in the mahogany ceiling directly above us.

He looked back at the two officers beside him. "Secure the room. Call an ambulance for Ms. Vance."

"Wait!" Madison screamed, running forward and grabbing Detective Miller's sleeve. "You can't arrest my dad! It's my birthday! We haven't even opened the gifts yet!"

Detective Miller looked at Madison as if she were an alien species. He gently, but firmly, detached her fingers from his coat.

"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, stepping up to my father and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Put your hands behind your back."

"Do you know who I am?!" Richard roared, trying to pull away as the two officers grabbed his arms. "I built this city! I know the mayor! I donated two million dollars to the police charity gala last month!"

"Then you should know how handcuffs work, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller replied coldly, snapping the steel bracelets around Richard's wrists with two loud, sharp clicks. "You are under arrest for felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, extortion, and corporate bank fraud."

As the officers turned Richard around and began marching him past two hundred silent, staring guests, my father turned his head, his eyes burning with pure, murderous hatred as he looked at me.

"You're dead, Eleanor!" Richard hissed, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers as he was dragged toward the exit. "You will never see a dime from this family! I will strip you of everything you own! You hear me?! Everything!"

May you like

I stood straight, ignoring the blood dripping onto my shoe.

"You didn't give me anything, Dad," I whispered, though my voice carried across the silent room. "I bought it all myself."
