Chapter 6 - The Ledger That Could Destroy an Empire

The old Moretti estate stood two hours outside Paris, hidden beyond forest roads and iron gates rusted by decades of rain.

Luca remembered nothing about it.

Yet the moment they drove through the entrance, something inside him recognized the place.

A stone fountain.

A long gravel drive.

Chestnut trees lining the road.

Then a memory surfaced.

He had been six.

His father had brought him here.

Another boy had been playing beside the fountain.

No.

Not a boy.

A young girl.

Elena’s mother?

He couldn't place it.

Elena sat beside him holding her mother’s unsent letter.

She had read it twenty times.

Only three paragraphs mattered.

Her mother claimed Darius had once been Antonio’s closest friend.

After Antonio died, Darius stayed inside the Moretti organization because he believed leaving would expose Elena.

He sent the threatening letters.

Not to frighten her for pleasure.

To stop her from investigating until she was old enough and powerful enough to survive the truth.

“That doesn't excuse them,” Elena said.

“No.”

“It means he manipulated me for twelve years.”

“Yes.”

“You're remarkably bad at comforting people.”

“I've been told.”

She almost smiled.

The car stopped.

The estate doors opened.

Darius stood inside.

Unarmed.

Elena’s mother sat beside the fireplace.

Alive.

Elena ran to her.

Her mother stood slowly.

They embraced.

For several seconds, Elena was sixteen again.

Then she stepped back.

“You knew.”

Her mother’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You knew who Darius was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Dad.”

“Yes.”

Elena’s voice broke.

“And you let me think we were alone.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“So was everyone, apparently.”

Her mother flinched.

Elena instantly regretted the cruelty but did not apologize.

Not yet.

Luca faced Darius.

“Explain.”

Darius looked older than he had that morning.

“Antonio discovered something in 2013.”

“Victor’s theft?”

“No.”

“Matteo?”

“No.”

Darius looked toward Elena.

“Your father discovered Moretti Holdings was built partly with money stolen from another organization.”

Luca frowned.

“What organization?”

“A banking consortium controlled by three criminal families.”

Elena stared.

“Why does that matter now?”

“Because your father found the original ledger proving who paid whom.”

Darius opened a safe.

Removed a leather-bound book.

Old.

Handwritten.

He placed it on the table.

“This?”

“Yes.”

Luca opened it.

Names filled the pages.

Judges.

Police officials.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

Payments spanning thirty years.

If real, the ledger could destroy careers across Europe.

“Why did Antonio have it?”

“He found it while investigating missing company funds.”

Darius looked at Elena.

“He intended to give it to authorities.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

“Because Matteo discovered him.”

Elena’s mother closed her eyes.

Darius continued.

“Matteo ordered Victor to frighten Antonio. Victor hired Keller. Antonio died.”

“We know.”

“No.”

Darius’s voice hardened.

“You know the part Matteo admitted.”

Luca looked at him.

“What part didn’t he?”

“After Antonio’s death, Victor found out about the ledger.”

Elena understood.

“He’s been looking for it ever since.”

“Yes.”

“So the stolen money…”

“Was funding a network designed to find and control everyone who knew it existed.”

Luca looked toward the pages.

“Why didn't you give this to police years ago?”

Darius laughed without humor.

“Half the names in that book were police.”

Silence.

Elena looked at her mother.

“You trusted him?”

“I trusted your father.”

Her mother touched the ledger.

“Antonio told me if anything happened, Darius would protect us.”

Elena’s throat tightened.

“Then why did Dad’s letter warn Luca’s father about Darius?”

Darius nodded.

“Good question.”

He removed another sheet.

Antonio’s original letter.

The version found in Victor’s coat had been altered.

One sentence was different.

The real letter read:

Darius Vane has been feeding false information to people outside the family at my request. I do not know how long he can continue without being exposed. Matteo is compromised. Protect Luca.

Elena stared.

“Victor changed it.”

“Yes.”

“To make us distrust you.”

“Yes.”

Luca looked at Darius.

“You could have told me.”

“Would you have believed me?”

Luca did not answer.

Darius gave a tired smile.

“That is why Antonio chose Elena.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“He knew you would eventually investigate.”

“I was sixteen.”

“He knew you.”

Darius reached into the safe again.

Removed an envelope.

Her name was written across it.

Antonio’s handwriting.

Elena’s knees nearly failed.

Her mother covered her mouth.

“Why didn’t you give me this?”

“Because Antonio left instructions.”

Darius handed it over.

“Only after you found the ledger yourself.”

“I didn’t.”

“You found the money trail that led to it.”

Her fingers trembled as she opened the letter.

Antonio’s words seemed to erase twelve years.

My Elena, if you're reading this, then I failed to come home.

She stopped.

Luca turned away slightly, giving her privacy.

She continued.

Her father apologized.

He told her he had not been brave because he lacked fear.

He had been terrified.

But he believed silence allowed powerful men to turn lies into history.

He told Elena never to trade her life for revenge.

Never to confuse anger with justice.

And never to believe she had to finish his fight simply because he had died.

The final paragraph made her cry.

If you choose to walk away from all of this, I will be proud of you. If you choose to expose it, I will be proud of you. The only thing I ask is that the choice belongs to you.

Elena lowered the letter.

For the first time since she was sixteen, her father was not asking anything from her.

She had permission to live.

Luca stood beside her.

“What do you want to do?”

The same question he had asked in the conference room.

What do you need?

What do you want?

Everyone else had chosen for her.

Her father, in the end, had not.

Elena looked at the ledger.

“Publish it.”

Darius stiffened.

“All of it?”

“Through independent prosecutors in multiple countries.”

Luca nodded.

“And the company?”

She looked at him.

“Clean it.”

“That could destroy Moretti Holdings.”

“If it deserves to survive, it will.”

Luca smiled faintly.

“There’s the secretary I hired.”

“Executive secretary.”

“Right.”

They spent six hours digitizing the ledger.

Copies went to prosecutors, international anti-corruption agencies, and journalists.

Darius provided testimony.

Elena’s mother agreed to testify about Antonio’s final weeks.

Matteo, confronted with the evidence, began cooperating from custody.

Victor refused.

Until investigators froze accounts containing more than one hundred eighty million euros.

Then he asked for a lawyer.

By afternoon, the Moretti empire had become the center of the largest financial investigation in Europe.

Luca stood at the estate window.

“It may all disappear.”

Elena joined him.

“The company?”

“Yes.”

“How do you feel?”

He considered it.

“Free.”

She looked at him.

That was not the answer she expected.

“My father built something he thought would protect the family.”

Luca stared across the trees.

“Instead, everyone spent thirty years protecting the thing he built.”

Elena understood.

An empire became another prison if preserving it required sacrificing people.

“We can rebuild.”

Luca looked at her.

“We?”

She immediately regretted the word.

“I meant—”

“I know what you meant.”

“Good.”

“But I like the first version better.”

Her heartbeat changed.

Before she could answer, Tomas entered.

His face was grim.

“We have a problem.”

Luca sighed.

“Of course we do.”

Tomas placed a tablet on the table.

Victor’s transport vehicle had been attacked.

Elena stared.

“Victor escaped?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“Victor is alive.”

Tomas enlarged an image from the scene.

A black sedan had forced the police convoy to stop.

Masked men removed one prisoner.

Not Victor.

Matteo.

Luca’s face hardened.

“Who took him?”

“We don't know.”

Elena looked toward the ledger.

Someone named inside it had realized Matteo might testify.

And they were not going to let him reach court.

Then Luca’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You published the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Then Matteo dies tonight.”

Luca’s expression did not change.

“Where?”

“You’ll receive coordinates.”

The voice continued.

“Bring Antonio Rossi’s daughter.”

Elena’s blood turned cold.

“Why her?”

The answer came after a pause.

“Because her father stole something from us that is not in the ledger.”

The line went dead.

Darius went pale.

Luca saw it.

“What aren't you telling us?”

Darius stared at Elena.

Then at her mother.

Elena’s mother whispered:

“Antonio had another file.”

Elena felt the floor disappear beneath her.

“What file?”

Her mother looked toward her.

May you like

“One containing the names of the men who ordered Luca’s father killed.”
