Chapter 15

Two and a half years after the engagement reception, Mia was seven.

The chain no longer existed.

Lorenzo had wanted to destroy it immediately.

Rachel advised preserving it while legal matters were active.

After the cases ended, Mia asked what happened to it.

Lorenzo told her it was locked in an evidence box.

“Can I see?”

He hesitated.

Then asked her therapist.

Eventually, yes.

Mia looked at the chain once.

It seemed smaller than she remembered.

“Camille put ring here?”

“Yes.”

“You said leash is hers.”

“Yes.”

Mia thought.

“That was mean.”

Lorenzo almost laughed.

“It was.”

“She was mean first.”

“Yes.”

“Still mean.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“Yes.”

Seven-year-old morality remained refreshingly direct.

Camille had completed the legal requirements tied to her case.

She lived in another state.

Her brother’s company survived in reduced form under new management.

Owen had repaid part of the disputed money through settlements and lost control of several major contracts.

Nora’s initials were formally cleared from the questionable approvals.

Bellini Estate Services adopted permanent procurement controls.

The scandal cost Lorenzo money.

Relationships.

Reputation.

It also gave him something harder to measure.

A house where people asked before obeying.

Nora had moved into her own home six months earlier.

She still worked three days a week.

Mia initially hated the change.

Then discovered Nora’s house had a backyard swing.

That improved matters significantly.

One Saturday afternoon, Lorenzo arrived to pick Mia up.

She ran outside carrying cookies.

“Nora made these.”

Nora appeared behind her.

“Mia stirred batter. Do not let her claim authorship.”

“I did important stirring.”

“Of course.”

Lorenzo smiled.

On the drive home, Mia asked:

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you ever getting married?”

Lorenzo almost missed the turn.

“What?”

“Emma’s dad got married.”

“Okay.”

“And her stepmom is nice.”

“Good.”

Mia looked out the window.

“Can you have nice one?”

Lorenzo laughed despite himself.

“I’ll put that on the requirements.”

She became serious.

“No chains.”

“That will also be on the requirements.”

“No making me work.”

“Yes.”

“No taking Nora away.”

Lorenzo glanced at her.

“Nora decides where Nora goes.”

Mia frowned.

She still disliked that concept.

Then:

“Can I say if I don’t like her?”

“If I ever date someone?”

“Yes.”

“You can always tell me how you feel.”

“Do I decide?”

There it was.

The harder question.

Lorenzo thought carefully.

“You don’t choose who I love.”

Mia looked disappointed.

“But I choose whether somebody is safe enough to be around you.”

She considered that.

“Okay.”

Then she ate another cookie.

That evening, Lorenzo sat alone in the dining room after Mia went upstairs.

The engagement had ended.

Camille’s attempt to use his daughter against Nora had been exposed.

The financial scheme was resolved.

Nora’s name was cleared.

The household no longer treated family proximity as authority.

Mia had learned that helping someone and serving under threat were not the same thing.

Lorenzo had learned that protecting his daughter required more than appearing at the moment something went wrong.

It required building a life where she could speak before she needed rescuing.

Only one question remained unanswered.

Whether Lorenzo would ever trust himself to bring another woman into that life.

Not because he was afraid of being hurt.

Because the next person would not simply be entering his world.

May you like

She would be entering Mia’s.

And this time, Lorenzo intended to understand the difference before he offered anyone a ring.
