Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING OF DAMIAN CROSS

Over the next two months, the facade of Damian Cross’s new life broke apart completely.

Without the backing of Vance Logistics, Sterling North Capital fired Damian to salvage their reputation. Victoria Langford’s father, realizing Damian was now financial poison in New York, forced Victoria to end their engagement publicly.

Damian was evicted from his expensive luxury apartment in Tribeca and forced to move back into a tiny rental outside the city, buried under legal fees and mountain-high credit card debt he had accumulated trying to look rich.

Meanwhile, Ava’s life flourished.

Under Julian’s guidance, she took full control of the Vance Cultural Foundation. She wasn't just a figurehead; her sharp mind, organizational brilliance, and deep empathy allowed her to launch major housing initiatives for low-income families across the city. The media hailed her as a breath of fresh air in New York high society.

But something else was changing, too.

The fake engagement was no longer feeling fake.

On a cold night in January, Julian and Ava sat together in the library of his penthouse. A fire crackled in the hearth as they reviewed foundation budget sheets over takeout Chinese food—a ritual Ava had insisted on bringing into his ultra-luxurious lifestyle.

"You're working too late," Julian said, closing her laptop gently.

Ava smiled, leaning back against the leather sofa. "I love it, Julian. For the first time in my life, I’m building something meaningful. I’m not working to pay someone else’s bills."

Julian sat beside her, his grey eyes searching her face in the soft firelight. "You never were ordinary, Ava. Damian Cross was simply too blind to see what he had."

Ava looked into his eyes. "And what do you see, Julian?"

Julian reached out, his long fingers gently cupping her jaw. The warmth of his palm sent a wave of electric shivers down her spine.

"I see the only woman who ever made this empty castle feel like a home," Julian whispered.

He leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away.

Ava didn't move. She closed her eyes as his lips met hers—a deep, gentle, and overwhelmingly passionate kiss that shattered every professional boundary they had drawn between them.
