Chapter 1 - The Bloody Envelope

"Adrian, who was that?" Madison asked, her voice high and laced with an annoying edge of irritation as she clutched her hospital gown against her chest. "Why are you covered in blood? You’re scaring me!"

Adrian didn't answer. He couldn't. His gaze was frozen on his own hands. Dark, sticky crimson filled the fine lines of his palms—Elena’s blood. The woman who had quietly built the foundation of his life for seven years was currently fighting for her breath behind a pair of heavy double doors, while the woman he had spent millions on stood three feet away, complaining about being frightened.

"Adrian!" Madison stepped closer, reaching out to touch his arm. "Look at me. You're shaking. Was that... was that your wife? What is she even doing at this hospital?"

Adrian wiped his hands violently against his charcoal trousers, but the blood only smeared, staining the expensive Italian wool. A cold, suffocating wave of reality hit him like an icy wall.

"Get back in your room, Madison," Adrian said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, deadened weight that made Madison stumble back half a step.

"What? Adrian, I have a panic attack coming on! My chest—"

"I said get back in your room," Adrian repeated, turning his dark eyes onto her. For eleven months, those eyes had looked at her with indulgence, desire, and blind indulgence. Now, they were hollowed out by an unforgiving frost. "If you take another step into this hallway, I will have security remove you from this building."

Madison’s jaw dropped. "You can't talk to me like that! I'm sick!"

"Mr. Vale?"

A tall, grey-haired trauma nurse emerged from the surgical prep bay, carrying a plastic biohazard bag containing Elena’s ruined belongings. Her face was set in a grim, practiced line.

"Are you Elena Vale's husband?" the nurse asked.

"Yes," Adrian rasped, instantly stepping past Madison, completely ignoring her gasp of outrage. "I'm Adrian Vale. Is she... is she alive?"

"She's in critical condition. Dr. Hayes is performing an emergency laparotomy to stop internal hemorrhaging. Her vehicle was broadsided by an unregistered heavy truck near the industrial district on 4th Avenue. It was a high-speed impact."

4th Avenue.

Adrian’s mind raced. What was Elena doing near the 4th Avenue industrial sector? That was the logistics corridor for Vale Meridian—specifically, the port storage facilities that handled unmanifested cargo. She had no business there. She was supposed to be at her charitable foundation downtown.

"These were on her person," the nurse said, handing him the clear plastic bag. "Her phone was destroyed in the crash, but we recovered her coat and handbag. I suggest you hold onto them."

Adrian reached out with trembling fingers, taking the heavy plastic bag. Inside lay the ruined cream wool coat, stiff with dried blood.

Madison hurried up behind him, peering over his shoulder. "Adrian, please, this is awful, but you need to sit down with me. You're bleeding on the floor—"

"Quiet!" Adrian snarled, snapping around so fast Madison flinched.

He unzipped the bag with unsteady hands. His fingers brushed against the rough texture of the cream coat. As he reached into the broad side pocket, his knuckles brushed against something stiffHere is the comprehensive, multi-chapter continuation of the narrative.
