Chapter 6 - SUNRISE ON THE HILLSIDE

Two months later, the Vermont morning sun broke over the twelve acres of manicured hillside, casting a warm, golden glow across the iron gates of the Moretti estate.

Inside the courtyard, the central fountain bubbled happily, its mist catching the early light.

On the wide stone veranda, a long wooden picnic table was laden with fresh pastries, hot coffee, and a towering stack of cinnamon pancakes dusted with powdered sugar. Around the table sat a peculiar, yet perfectly balanced, family.

Leo sat between Elena and his father, laughing loudly as he tossed a piece of pastry to a stray golden retriever that had somehow adopted the estate as its permanent home. His voice, once locked behind a prison of engineered silence, now rang clear and bright across the lawn, chattering endlessly about toy trains, cloud shapes, and how high Mia could swing on the oak tree rope.

Dominic watched his son, a soft, peaceful expression on his face that no one outside these gates would have ever believed possible. The syndicate board had been dismantled, Marcus was awaiting trial in a federal penitentiary, and the dark, violent shadows of Dominic's past had finally receded into the background.

Elena poured a fresh cup of coffee, sliding it across the table toward Dominic. Her hair was down, falling in soft waves over her shoulders, her eyes bright and free of the haunting desperation that had marked the day she first crossed those gates.

"You're staring," Elena teased gently, taking a bite of her toast.

"I'm just making sure this isn't a dream," Dominic replied, smiling as he reached across the table to interlock his fingers with hers. The heavy gold signet ring caught the morning sun. "Six months ago, I thought my life was a fortress built on stone and blood."

"And now?" Elena asked, tilting her head with a warm smile.

"Now it's a home," Dominic said softly.

Across the grass, Mia grabbed Leo's hand, pulling him toward the garden to chase a stray butterfly, their laughter echoing together like music.

Dominic squeezed Elena's hand, knowing that the debt he owed her could never truly be repaid — and realizing, with profound gratitude, that he never wanted it to be. They had walked out of the dark together, and for the first time in his life, the future looked entirely, brilliantly bright.
