Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Vultures

The room seemed to lose all oxygen.

Vanessa gasped, stumbling back two steps until her chair blocked her path, her eyes bulging out of her head as if she were looking at a ghost. Daniel collapsed back into his leather chair, clutching his chest, hyperventilating. Uncle Martin stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

I stretched my shoulders, pulling my suit jacket straight, standing at my full height of six-foot-two. My presence dominated the boardroom, towering over every sitting traitor in that space.

"Your... your legs..." Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling violently. "You... you were paralyzed... I saw the X-rays..."

"You saw what I wanted you to see, Vanessa," I said, my voice no longer weak or slurred, but ringing with the booming, resonant command that had built this multi-billion-dollar empire. "The crash was real. The paralysis was a stage play. I needed to see who would stand by me when I had nothing... and who would try to pick my corpse clean."

I walked slowly around the oval table. Each heavy step of my leather dress shoes against the hard floor sounded like a death knell for Uncle Martin's ambitions.

"Julian..." Uncle Martin stammered, his arrogance evaporating into sheer, unadulterated panic, sweating profusely through his silk shirt collar. "Julian, listen to me... this was all a misunderstanding! I was only trying to protect the firm! Blackwood Global—"

"Blackwood Global is a dummy shell corporation registered in Panama," I interrupted, standing right beside him, leaning down until my face was inches from his pale, sweating forehead. "And you, Uncle Martin, own thirty percent of it. You weren't merging Ashford International to save it. You were selling our assets to yourself for pennies on the dollar so you could cover your sixty-million-dollar gambling debts in Macau."

Martin collapsed into his chair, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't even speak.

I turned my eyes toward Daniel Brooks.

"Daniel," I said softly.

My former childhood friend began to cry, pulling at his collar. "Julian... please... Martin forced me! He threatened my family! He said if I didn't sign the affidavit, he would destroy my career!"

"You traded twenty years of friendship for a promised ten-percent promotion, Daniel," I said, devoid of all emotion. "You're fired. Effective four seconds ago."

Finally, my gaze landed on Vanessa.

She stood frozen against the glass window, her silver gown glittering mockingly in the bright morning light. The color had entirely left her face. She looked at my legs, then at my face, realizing the horrifying scope of her miscalculation.

"Julian... my love..." she whispered, taking a hesitant step toward me, attempting to put on that captivating, beautiful smile that had once fooled me completely. "You... you walked... Oh thank God! It’s a miracle! You're healed!"

She reached out her hands, trying to touch my arm, but Marcus stepped between us like an iron wall.

"Don't touch him," Marcus commanded sternly.

"Julian, please!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice turning shrill, real panic breaking through her polished exterior. "I was only acting! I was pretending to go along with your uncle so I could gather evidence for you! I loved you! I’ve always loved you!"

I let out a soft, bitter laugh.

"You called me worthless, Vanessa," I said, pulling a velvet jewelry box from my coat pocket. "You told me no one would ever want a man like me. You flicked my blanket off my legs in front of three hundred people to shame me."

I opened the box. Inside lay her engagement ring—the one she had quietly returned to my dresser yesterday morning thinking I was too cognitive-impaired to notice.

"You wanted a king, Vanessa," I said, shutting the box with a sharp SNAP. "Too bad you only had the heart for a traitor."

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom opened once more.

Four armed FBI special agents and two uniformed Chicago police officers stepped into the room, handcuffs gleaming at their belts.

"Martin Ashford, Daniel Brooks," the lead federal agent announced, pulling out a pair of warrants. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy."

As the officers slammed Martin and Daniel against the mahogany table, clicking the cold steel cuffs around their wrists, Vanessa rushed to my side, grabbing my sleeve frantically.

"Julian! What about me?! You can't let them ruin my life! I didn't break any laws!"

Eleanor Vance stepped forward with a thin, predatory smile. "Actually, Miss Sterling, you signed three fraudulent tax disclosures for Martin’s shell companies last month in exchange for that six-carat diamond ring. Federal marshals are waiting for you in the lobby."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. The police officers took her gently but firmly by the arms, pulling her away as she shrieked and screamed my name, her expensive heels dragging uselessly across the polished floor.

"Julian! Please! Give me another chance! Julian!"

Her shrieks faded down the long marble hallway until the double doors swung shut, leaving behind a profound, peaceful silence.

The remaining nine board members sat in utter awe, slowly rising to their feet, clapping tentatively at first, then breaking into a thunderous standing ovation.

I didn't care about their applause. They had stayed quiet in the ballroom too.

I turned away from the executive table and walked toward the corner of the room where Clara stood quietly, holding my briefcase, looking at me with those same clear, honest eyes that had seen my humanity when everyone else saw only weakness.

"Are you alright, Mr. Ashford?" she asked softly.

May you like

I looked down at her, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking across my face for the first time in six weeks.

"I'm better than alright, Clara," I said, holding out my arm to her. "Let's go home."
