Chapter 7 - ETHAN CAME BACK TO THE BOARDROOM IN A WHEELCHAIR, AND DAMIAN LOST EVERYTHING

Three weeks later, Ethan left the Lake Forest medical pavilion for the first time in nearly two years.

Not to hospital.

Not therapy clinic.

To Hale Holdings.

Roman opposed.

Ethan overruled.

His new eye-tracking tablet spoke with an artificial male voice Ethan hated.

The device gave him words.

That mattered more.

When Roman said corporate appearance could exhaust him, Ethan typed:

MY COMPANY TOO.

End discussion.

Dr. Morrison approved four-hour outing with medical support.

Claire helped him dress.

Dark tailored jacket modified for seated position.

White shirt.

No tie.

“You look terrifying,” she told him.

Device:

GOOD.

Roman entered.

Stopped.

Identical face.

Different body.

Same brother.

Something moved in his expression.

Ethan noticed.

DON’T CRY.

Roman glared.

Claire laughed.

Ethan added:

CLAIRE CAN.

“Traitor,” she said.

The trip into Chicago drew no press because company used private garage.

Inside boardroom, directors stood when Ethan entered.

He hated that.

Device:

SIT DOWN. I’M NOT DEAD.

Miriam Chen sat first.

Others followed.

Roman took seat beside, not head.

Ethan’s voting rights had been provisionally restored through court after independent neurocognitive evaluation confirmed intact decision-making capacity.

Roman had relinquished proxy.

Damian remained under indictment and house detention for financial and medical conspiracy, though prosecutors had not yet charged him for original ambush because Grant link needed corroboration.

Grant Mercer remained free.

His lawyers claimed Hale family fabricating allegations.

Nolan changed that.

He attended board on crutches.

Roman hugged him privately before meeting.

No apology big enough.

Nolan said:

“You should’ve answered phone.”

Roman replied:

“I know.”

Then Nolan presented evidence.

Before ambush, he had photographed Damian meeting Grant because port schedules changed without Roman approval.

He sent Ethan.

After shooting, Nolan suspected Damian but had no proof.

He feared accusing Roman’s uncle while Roman wounded and Ethan incapacitated.

“So you stayed quiet,” Claire said afterward.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I thought I was protecting Roman from civil war.”

Claire almost laughed sadly.

Everyone.

Protection.

Silence.

Same word.

Nolan continued investigation alone.

He discovered Rusk.

Keller payments.

Then Damian realized.

Hence kidnapping.

Board formally terminated Damian for cause.

His vested family-office benefits frozen pending restitution.

The forty-two million diverted from maritime division was traced.

Some recovered.

Some gone.

But Hale Holdings survived.

Then Ethan requested floor.

Device spoke:

I WANT MEDICAL PAVILION REVIEWED.

Roman frowned.

“For what?”

EVERY STAFF MEMBER.

Another.

PAY. HOURS. REPORTING.

Claire looked at him.

Ethan continued:

NOBODY SHOULD FEAR LOSING JOB FOR QUESTIONING DOCTOR.

Dr. Morrison nodded.

Ethan wanted independent patient advocate in any future Hale-funded medical facility.

Clear whistleblower policy.

Medication reconciliation.

Family members could not override patient consent.

Roman watched.

His brother had been powerless because too many people assumed hierarchy mattered more than voice.

Now first thing he wanted was system preventing repeat.

The board approved.

Unanimous.

Then Ethan typed:

CLAIRE.

She looked.

“Yes?”

JOB.

Roman almost smiled.

Claire raised eyebrow.

“What job?”

PATIENT COMMUNICATION PROGRAM.

Her throat tightened.

Roman said:

“That sounds like employment offer.”

Claire looked at him.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“I know that face.”

“What face?”

“The money punctuation face.”

Board members pretended not to listen.

Ethan’s device said:

SHE’S RIGHT.

Roman glared at twin.

Miriam Chen smiled.

Claire approached Ethan.

“I’m not qualified to run clinical program.”

SCHOOL.

She stopped.

He knew she wanted to finish occupational therapy.

Claire’s eyes filled.

“You remembered?”

YOU TOLD ME GROCERIES FOR SIX MONTHS. I HEARD EVERYTHING.

The room laughed.

Claire covered face.

Of course.

Ethan had been listening while she complained about life.

He continued:

GO BACK. THEN HELP.

Claire swallowed.

“Maybe.”

Device:

THAT MEANS YES.

“It means maybe.”

Roman watched something beautiful.

Ethan did not need rescuing.

He was planning.

Then security alert interrupted.

Lobby lockdown.

A man had entered reception with package addressed to Ethan.

No weapon.

Courier.

Inside package:

A shattered wristwatch.

Nolan’s.

And note.

You should have died at the river.

Grant.

Roman’s old instincts surged.

“I’m ending this.”

Claire looked.

“How?”

He did not answer.

That was problem.

Ethan’s device:

LEGAL.

Roman turned.

His brother stared.

PROVE IT.

Nolan said:

“We can.”

He had one more piece.

The night of ambush, his dash camera automatically uploaded thirty seconds before being smashed.

Damian’s fixer had intercepted Nolan near depot.

Audio caught:

“Mercer’s men are in position. Damian says both brothers.”

Grant Mercer’s name not directly spoken by Grant, but combined with shell payments and witness could support.

Then Marissa cooperated further.

Her brother, Luke Kane, finally turned himself in.

Grant’s men had forced him into debt arrangement and used him to pressure Marissa.

Luke possessed text chain from Grant lieutenant giving Roman’s movements and rewarding medication updates.

He agreed testify.

Federal racketeering and attempted murder investigation strengthened.

Grant sensed.

He began liquidating properties.

Roman wanted borders closed yesterday.

Kara said legal freeze underway.

Claire said:

“Let them.”

Roman hated waiting.

But he waited.

Then Grant made one final mistake.

He called Roman directly.

“Congratulations on resurrection.”

Roman recorded through counsel.

“What do you want?”

Grant laughed.

“Your brother was easier when he couldn’t talk.”

Roman’s face went cold.

Claire sat nearby.

Ethan listened through speaker.

Grant continued:

“Damian should’ve made sure Keller finished job.”

There.

Admission adjacent.

Roman said:

“You ordered ambush.”

Grant paused.

Then:

“You think I’d say that on phone?”

Smart.

Roman smiled.

“No.”

Grant continued:

“Give me port records and Nolan. I disappear.”

“No.”

“Then Claire Dawson disappears first.”

Roman’s eyes changed.

Claire felt chill.

Grant knew location?

Her security.

Apartment.

Roman said nothing.

Grant laughed.

“You care about maid.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

Roman answered:

“She has a name.”

Then ended.

Kara immediately moved.

Police protection around Claire.

But Claire had another idea.

“Don’t hide me.”

Roman stared.

“Absolutely not.”

She raised hand.

“No bait.”

“Good.”

“I have school orientation tomorrow.”

“No.”

“Roman.”

Grant wants her isolated.

Scared.

Controlled.

If she vanished, he won psychologically.

Claire said:

“I’m going.”

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“Armored car?”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“Reasonable car.”

He glared.

Compromise: licensed protection, police coordination, no public route.

She attended orientation at community college transfer program.

Sat among twenty-year-olds and thirty-year-olds.

Filled forms.

Occupational Therapy Assistant — Reentry Track.

She cried in bathroom.

Not fear.

Possibility.

When she left, Roman waited across street.

Not because he ordered route.

Because she invited him.

He looked at folder.

“You enrolled.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“You’re not paying tuition.”

His face fell.

“I didn’t say—”

“You thought.”

“Yes.”

“I have savings.”

“Your salary—”

“Roman.”

He sighed.

“Fine.”

She smiled.

“Maybe scholarship later if independent.”

“Cruel.”

“Alive.”

He opened car door.

She did not get in immediately.

“Why are you here?”

“You asked.”

“No.”

Meaning deeper.

Roman looked.

“Because when Grant threatened you, every part of me wanted to lock you in Lake Forest.”

Claire waited.

“And?”

“I came here instead.”

Another.

“To watch you walk out of school you chose.”

Her eyes softened.

“That’s why.”

Claire kissed him.

This time longer.

Roman’s hand moved to waist.

Stopped.

She leaned closer.

Permission.

Then his phone rang.

Terrible timing.

Kara.

Grant Mercer had been arrested at a private airfield outside Gary, Indiana.

He was boarding charter with two passports and six million dollars in bearer instruments.

The external war had finally reached handcuffs.

But the Hale family war was not finished.

Because after Grant’s arrest, Damian’s attorney requested emergency meeting.

Damian wanted to cooperate.

And according to him, Roman still did not know the worst thing Grant Mercer had done.

The ambush was not the beginning.

Grant had been inside Hale business for nearly twelve years.

May you like

And Roman’s late father may have known.
