Chapter 4 - The Shadows at the Gate

Midnight arrived with a howling winter wind that rattled the ancient leaded-glass windows of the estate.

I sat in the small armchair in my third-floor bedroom, reviewing my sister Maya’s medical charts on my tablet. The first twenty-four hours were almost over. I had survived the baseball, the fire, and the disastrous family dinner. But I knew that trauma wasn't solved in a day; it was an ongoing war fought in small, painful inches.

A soft knock at my door broke the silence.

I opened it to find Adrian standing in the hallway. He was holding two crystal glasses and a bottle of amber scotch. He looked tired, his dark hair messy, his usual posture of unyielding power replaced by an air of deep, quiet exhaustion.

"May I come in?" he asked quietly.

I stepped back, allowing him entry. "No scotch for me, Mr. Vale. I'm on duty."

Adrian set the glasses on the small side table, declining to pour himself a drink. He walked over to the window, staring out into the dark, snow-dusted grounds of the estate.

"Fourteen caregivers," Adrian murmured softly. "Some were former military. Some had doctorates in child psychology. They all lasted less than a week. You've been here sixteen hours, and my sons actually ate a full meal without breaking a window."

"They're good boys, Adrian," I said, dropping the formal 'Mr. Vale'. "They're just drowning. And so are you."

Adrian closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against the cold window glass. "When Elena died four years ago... the doctor told me her heart simply gave out. I was building Vale Logistics. I was fighting off rival cartels and corporate raiders who wanted to tear my family apart. I thought... I thought if I built a fortress, if I earned enough billions, I could keep them safe from everything."

"You built a fortress, Adrian," I said gently, stepping closer to him. "But you forgot to put a home inside it. You removed all her photos because looking at her hurts you. But to them, it feels like you're trying to erase her memory."

Adrian turned around, looking at me with a vulnerability that made my chest ache. "How do I fix it, Nia? I know how to run an empire. I don't know how to talk to my own children."

Before I could answer, a sharp red light began flashing silently on the wall panel near the door.

The estate's internal silent alarm had been triggered.

Adrian’s demeanor changed instantly. The vulnerable father vanished, replaced in a split second by the dangerous, calculating crime boss. He pulled a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from a concealed holster beneath his armpit with terrifying speed.

"Stay here," Adrian ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register.

"Where are the boys?" I asked, my pulse spiking instantly.

"Their wing is secured by automatic steel shutters when the perimeter alarm trips," Adrian said, moving toward the door. "Marcus and the team are moving to intercept."

CRACK!

The sharp sound of suppressed gunshot fire echoed from the floor below us, followed by the shattering of heavy glass in the main gallery.

"They're inside," I whispered, panic rising in my throat. "Adrian, the boys' wing! Luke told me earlier that the emergency shutter on the north window has been jammed since last Tuesday!"

Adrian’s face turned deathly pale. "Luke's room."

Without another word, we both sprinted down the dark hallway toward the north wing.
