Chapter 3 - The Crypt and the Confession

The heavy iron door muffled the outside world into a complete, eerie vacuum. The flashlight beam cut a pale tunnel through the dust-filled air as Adrian threw his weight against the crypt entrance. The iron held firm, reinforced by heavy deadbolts that couldn't be broken from the inside without heavy machinery.

“Damn it,” Adrian cursed, striking the cold metal with the flat of his hand. He turned back to the laptop, his expression grim. “The signal is automated. Closing the door triggered a timed relay. They wanted us down here.”

“To trap us?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from shaking as I scanned the dark corners of the ancient tomb.

“No,” a voice answered from the shadows near the far wall.

Both of us spun around, Adrian stepping protectively in front of me with his fists raised. From behind a towering marble pillar stepped a figure cloaked in a dark trench coat, holding a small digital audio recorder in one hand. As the figure stepped into the reach of the flashlight beam, my breath caught.

It wasn't Trevor.

It was a woman with sharp blonde hair, wearing an expensive designer coat splattered with dried mud. Her eyes were wide, feverish, and possessed by a desperate, erratic energy.

“Mara?” Adrian breathed, his voice dropping an octave as the recognition hit him like a physical blow.

Mara Radcliffe—the woman rumored to be carrying Trevor’s child, the woman reported missing for days—stepped fully into the light. But she didn't look like a victim. She looked like a general who had just lost her final battalion.

“Hello, brother,” Mara laughed, a hollow, brittle sound that echoed off the stone walls. “Did you enjoy the little scavenger hunt? I figured if I didn't lure you down here, you’d keep believing Trevor was the mastermind behind all of this.”

“What are you talking about?” I demanded, stepping out from behind Adrian. “Trevor had your ultrasound in his coat. He lied to me about everything!”

“Trevor is a pathetic, spineless coward,” Mara spat, her eyes darting toward me with a flash of bitter jealousy. “He didn't mastermind the affair, Camille. I did. Every single detail. I tracked you for months before he even proposed. I made sure he fell into my trap because I needed a proxy—someone disposable—to take the fall when my family’s corporate empire finally imploded.”

Adrian took a slow, dangerous step forward. “You faked your pregnancy, Mara? You put us through weeks of hell, you made people think you were dead, all for a corporate coup?”

“It’s bigger than a coup, Adrian,” Mara yelled, her voice cracking as tears finally spilled over her lower lashes. “Father was selling off our division to a shell corporation tied to international syndicates. I tried to stop him, but he cut me out of the board. So I engineered my own disappearance. I used Trevor’s ambition against him. I gave him that fake ultrasound, told him to hide it where you’d find it, Camille, so that when the inevitable fallout happened, the blame would point anywhere except at the real leak inside the company!”

The pieces of the nightmare clicked together with terrifying clarity. Trevor hadn't been running because he was a dangerous mafia boss or a ruthless criminal; he had been trapped in a web spun by a woman far more dangerous than he could ever hope to be. He was a pawn who had tried to cut the strings too late.

“Where is he, Mara?” Adrian demanded, his voice dangerously low. “Where is Trevor?”

Mara smiled, a twisted, tragic expression. “He’s right where he deserves to be. Waiting for the authorities to pick him up at the airport, carrying the exact flash drive containing Father’s illegal ledger. Only... I encrypted it with a dead-man’s switch. Unless I input the decryption key within the next thirty minutes, the entire system—including every asset the Radcliffes own—wipes clean.”

She pulled a small silver detonator-style keypad from her coat pocket, her thumb resting over the central red button.

“So here are our options,” Mara whispered, her eyes locking onto mine. “Either Adrian signs over his voting shares in the corporation to me right now... or we all stay locked in this tomb until the timer runs out.”
