Chapter 6 - A Cold Calculation

Victoria’s gray eyes flicked down to the black box resting on her pristine desk. For a microsecond, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her face before she smoothly re-masked her expression with a cool, arrogant smile.
"I have no idea what that is, Adrien," she said, leaning back in her leather executive chair and crossing her legs. "If you have a problem with your household appliances, I suggest calling an electrician, not breaking into my private residence."
I didn't answer. I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the silver token she had given to the courier, and flipped it onto the desk. It spun with a metallic ring before falling flat beside the black box.
Victoria’s smile vanished.
"You touched my children, Victoria," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the weight of a death sentence. "You used a military-grade acoustic weapon on three eight-month-old infants to drive them into agony."
Victoria let out a cold, soft sigh, dropping the innocent act completely. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the desk, her eyes glinting with malicious amusement.
"They're just babies, Adrien," she spat softly. "They don't know what agony is. But you do. And that was the point."
"Why?" I asked, keeping my posture entirely rigid.
"Because your family controls forty percent of the Midwest distribution lines!" Victoria hissed, her composure cracking into sharp, envious rage. "Ever since Clara died, everyone expected you to fall apart! We expected the Moretti Syndicate to fracture! But instead, you locked down Lake Forest, doubled your security, and continued to crush my brother's business in Gary!"
She stood up slowly, her dark red hair framing her pale face like a flame.
"Julian wanted to order a hit on you," she continued, pacing behind her desk. "But I told him no. Killing you makes you a martyr. It causes a full-scale war that brings the Federal Bureau into our accounts. But if Adrien Moretti is distracted... if he’s driven out of his mind by sick, screaming children that no doctor in the world can cure... he steps down voluntarily. He hands the reins to his capos. And then we buy those capos out one by one."
She looked at me, a cruel, triumphant smirk touching her lips.
"It was a masterstroke, Adrien. Clean. Quiet. Invisible. No blood, no police, no evidence."
"Except for one thing," I said softly.
Victoria raised an eyebrow. "Oh? And what's that?"
"You forgot about the people you consider invisible," I said, stepping closer to the desk. "A four-year-old girl in a yellow lace dress—the daughter of my housekeeper—saw you give that coin to my courier. She heard the frequency before any adult in that house could register it. She saved my children."
Victoria stared at me, then burst into a sharp, mocking laugh. "A child? You tracked me down because a servant's child saw me at a gate? How utterly pathetic!"
"You think she’s pathetic?" I asked, my dark eyes locking onto hers. "That little girl has more courage in her small finger than your entire family possesses. And unlike you, she understands what loyalty means."
I turned to Marco. "Bring it in."
Marco stepped forward, carrying a heavy metal case. He opened it on the side table, revealing a commercial high-output acoustic amplifier hooked up to four directional speakers facing the interior of the penthouse.
Victoria’s face went instantly pale. "What are you doing?"
"This box you placed behind my children's cribs emitted twenty kilohertz," I explained calmly as Marco plugged the system into the penthouse wall outlet. "It causes severe disorientation, inner-ear damage, and intense migraine pressure in adults within ninety seconds."
"Adrien... you wouldn't," Victoria whispered, backing away toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city. "If you do this, Julian will tear your estate to the ground! He will execute every person who works for you!"
"Julian won't do anything," I said, pulling out my phone and pressing a button on the screen. "Because twenty minutes ago, my men in Gary, Indiana seized four of your brother's illegal armaments shipments at the docks. Right now, your brother is currently fleeing state lines to avoid a federal warrant that my attorneys anonymously delivered to the District Attorney's office."
Victoria gasped, grabbing her desk for support as her entire world crumbled around her in a single instant.
"You didn't just lose this game, Victoria," I whispered, stepping up to her until I could see the sheer panic reflecting in her eyes. "You lost your family's empire."
I signaled to Marco.
Marco flipped the power switch on the amplifier.
A silent, invisible wave of intense acoustic pressure blasted through the sealed room.
May you like
Victoria instantly clutched her head, letting out a muffled scream as she collapsed to her knees on the marble floor. Her glass of wine shattered against the tiles, the red liquid pooling around her designer dress as she writhed in intense, agonizing disorientation.
I didn't watch her suffer. I turned my back, picked up my leather driving gloves from the desk, and walked out of the penthouse office, leaving her trapped in the very agony she had built for my children.
