Chapter 6 - THE SUNLIGHT ON THE SHORE

One year later.
The summer afternoon was warm and golden over the sandy shores of Cape Cod.
The gentle rhythm of the waves lapping against the beach created a soothing melody, accompanied by the distant cries of seagulls soaring high in the cloudless blue sky.
A small wooden beach house sat nestled among the sand dunes, its porch adorned with white rocking chairs and blooming sea lavender.
I sat on a woven blanket spread across the warm sand, wearing a casual white linen dress, my hair tied back in a loose ponytail, reading a hardcover book.
Nearby, Lena’s child was playing safely in a small plastic wading pool, giggling happily as Sarah poured water over his tiny plastic boat.
I set my book down on the blanket, leaned back on my elbows, and closed my eyes, letting the warm sunlight bathe my face.
There were no red flags to trace today. No fraudulent ledgers to audit. No hidden offshore shell companies to unmask.
For the first time in my life, my mind was entirely, beautifully still.
I reached down and picked up a handful of cool sand, letting the smooth white grains trickle through my fingers, watching them blow away in the soft ocean breeze.
Five years of grief had tried to bury me. A cruel husband and a deceitful mother-in-law had thought they could use my love as a weapon to fund their stolen paradise. They had believed I was small, fragile, and easily fooled.
They had forgotten that the darkest soil is where the strongest roots grow.
I looked out over the endless blue ocean, watching the sunlight sparkle across the surface like millions of tiny, crushed diamonds.
I took a deep, full breath of the clean salt air, feeling the strength in my lungs, the peace in my soul, and the unshakeable certainty of my own life.

I was no longer the widow who wept over an empty coffin.
I was Claire Montgomery—a woman who had faced the ghosts of her past, shattered their lies into dust, and stepped out into the brilliant, glorious light of a brand-new day.
