Chapter 7 - The Missing Father Finally Spoke—and Revealed Who Really Ordered Margaret Callahan’s Murder

Thomas Rowe was being held in an abandoned warehouse near the river.

Ronan found the location within thirty minutes.

Tessa insisted on going.

Ronan argued.

She won.

They entered through the rear.

The warehouse smelled of oil and rust.

Thomas was tied to a chair beneath a hanging light.

He looked older than Tessa remembered.

Blood covered his shirt.

"Dad."

His eyes opened.

"Tessa."

She ran to him.

Ronan's men cut the ropes.

Thomas grabbed Tessa.

"I'm sorry."

She cried against him.

"You lied to me."

"I know."

"You knew who I was."

"I knew enough."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because every person who knew the truth died."

Ronan stepped forward.

"Except you."

Thomas looked at him.

"You're Margaret's boy."

"Yes."

"I've waited fourteen years to tell you something."

"What?"

"Your mother trusted my father."

Ronan froze.

Thomas continued.

"Julian wasn't killed by Daniel."

"Then who?"

Thomas looked at Tessa.

"The man behind everything."

Ronan's face hardened.

"Name him."

Thomas shook his head.

"He isn't alive anymore."

"What?"

"He died two years ago."

Ronan stared.

"Then why are we still being hunted?"

"Because his son took over."

Silence.

"Who?"

Thomas looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Before he could answer, gunfire erupted.

Ronan pushed Tessa down.

His men returned fire.

Thomas shouted.

"Get her out!"

Ronan moved.

A bullet struck the wall beside Tessa.

Then another.

Someone was coming.

Ronan pulled Tessa behind a concrete pillar.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Please."

She stopped.

It was the first time he had said please.

Ronan moved through the darkness.

Three men fell.

A fourth escaped.

Thomas watched him.

"Ronan."

He turned.

"The man you're looking for isn't Daniel."

"Who?"

Thomas whispered.

"Arthur Fletcher."

Ronan stopped.

"The manager?"

Thomas nodded.

"Arthur was the son of the man who ordered your mother's death."

Tessa remembered.

Arthur had been there from the beginning.

He had been the one who forced her into the kitchen.

He had been the one who insisted Ronan eat.

He had known about the recipe.

He had known about Eda.

He had known about the blue tin.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Ronan called security.

"Find Arthur."

But the call failed.

A message appeared.

YOUR RESTAURANT IS MINE.

Then another.

COME ALONE.

Ronan looked at Tessa.

"We're going back."

Beaumont House was empty when they arrived.

Arthur stood in the private dining room.

He was holding the blue tin.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Ronan entered.

"You killed my mother."

Arthur smiled.

"My father did."

"You continued his work."

"Someone had to."

Tessa stepped forward.

"You killed Eda."

Arthur looked at her.

"She knew too much."

Tessa's eyes filled with tears.

"You used me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your teacher's recipe was the only way to get Ronan to remember."

Arthur opened the tin.

"My father discovered that Margaret had hidden the evidence inside the recipe."

Ronan stared.

"What evidence?"

Arthur laughed.

"The shipping records."

He threw papers onto the table.

"Your father had been stealing from his own companies."

Ronan stared.

Arthur continued.

"Margaret found out."

"Julian found out."

"Thomas found out."

"And all three were silenced."

Tessa looked at Ronan.

"Your father was guilty."

Ronan's jaw tightened.

Arthur smiled.

"But he wasn't the mastermind."

"Who was?"

Arthur looked at Tessa.

"Your mother."

Tessa froze.

"No."

"She discovered everything."

"Then why would she—"

"Because she joined them."

Arthur revealed the final piece.

Evelyn had initially worked with the Saint Crescent.

She had betrayed them.

She had tried to save Julian.

She had given birth to Tessa.

And she had hidden the evidence in the one place nobody would search.

A family recipe.

Ronan understood.

"The second ingredient."

Arthur nodded.

"Not a spice."

"What?"

"A message."

He pointed toward the recipe.

"The missing ingredient was a code."

Ronan grabbed the notebook.

The quantities were numbers.

Dates.

Coordinates.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Fourteen years of evidence hidden in food.

Arthur smiled.

"Your mother knew someone would eventually cook that dish again."

Tessa whispered.

"She knew I'd find it."

"Yes."

"Why me?"

Arthur's smile disappeared.

"Because you're the only person she trusted to survive."

Ronan stepped forward.

Arthur raised a gun.

"You won't shoot me."

"Why?"

"Because the last page tells you where the money went."

Ronan looked down.

Arthur smiled.

"Look."

Ronan turned the page.

A single name.

DANIEL VALE.

Arthur laughed.

But then the restaurant doors opened.

Daniel entered.

Arthur turned.

"You're late."

Daniel raised a gun.

"No."

Arthur's smile vanished.

"I'm early."

He shot Arthur.

Ronan fired at Daniel.

Daniel escaped through the back.

Arthur fell.

Tessa rushed to him.

"Why?"

Arthur coughed.

"Because..."

He looked at Ronan.

"...your father didn't die in that accident."

Ronan froze.

"He was murdered."

Arthur smiled weakly.

"And the man who ordered it..."

He looked toward the door.

"...was Daniel."

Then Arthur died.

Tessa stood beside Ronan.

The mystery had finally reached its center.

Daniel Vale was not protecting the secret.

He was the secret.
