Chapter 5 - The Drake Hotel Showdown

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was bathed in the warm, opulent glow of crystal chandeliers.
Thick velvet drapes lined the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Gold Coast, and silver champagne buckets sat atop mahogany tables where six men in expensive dark suits sat drinking.
At the center of the main table sat Angelo Ross, looking triumphant. Beside him were two senior capos from the Moretti family of New York, celebrating the imminent restructuring of the Chicago underworld.
"To a new era in the Midwest," the senior New York boss raised his glass, his heavy diamond ring sparkling under the lights. "Clean logistics, higher margins, and no more dealing with stubborn kids who think they run the city."
Angelo clinked his glass with a warm, brilliant smile. "Seth was his uncle’s nephew—brave, but completely blind to the reality of modern finance. By twelve o'clock today, Victor will have secured the North Side, and we will officially announce the transition."
Angelo took a sip of his crystal glass—and stopped.
The heavy, gilded double doors at the entrance of the grand ballroom swung open with a loud, echoing crack.
The conversation at the table died instantly. Two armed guards standing near the doors reached instinctively inside their suits.
A woman walked into the room.
She wore an exquisite, custom-tailored dress of deep wine-red velvet that hugged her broad hips and full waist with regal, unapologetic majesty. Her dark hair was styled into an intricate, elegant crown of braids, and around her neck sat a heavy, antique platinum necklace that belonged to the Basil family vault.
Fiona Callahan stepped into the ballroom, her chin lifted high, her hazel eyes sweeping over the room with the cool, terrifying authority of an empress inspecting a small, dirty cage.
Angelo’s jaw dropped. The champagne glass nearly slipped from his fingers.
"Fiona?" Angelo gasped, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the parquet floor. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past the hotel security?"
"Your hotel security is remarkably cheap, Angelo," Fiona said smoothly, her heels clicking rhythmically as she walked toward the main table. "Four hundred dollars to the head doorman was all it took."
"You... you shouldn't be here," Angelo stammered, his polished composure beginning to fray around the edges. He looked past her toward the doors, expecting to see Seth’s soldiers, but the hallway behind her appeared empty. "This is a private business meeting. Return to the estate immediately."
Fiona stopped ten feet from his table. She placed a sleek, black leather folder on an empty table beside her.
"I came to deliver a message, Angelo," Fiona said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the vast, echoing ballroom. "From my husband."
The New York bosses looked between Fiona and Angelo, their expressions turning suspicious and sharp. "Angelo... who is this fat woman? Is she Seth’s wife?"
Angelo ignored them, his eyes fixing onto Fiona with sudden, dark malice. He pulled a small, sleek pistol from his coat, hiding it beneath the line of the table. "Fiona, I don't know what kind of game you think you're playing, but you are way out of your depth. Go home before you get hurt."
Fiona smiled—a small, dark, pitying smile that made Angelo's stomach drop into a cold abyss.
"At ten-fifteen this morning," Fiona said, checking her gold wrist watch, "Victor Dane’s tactical team attempted to ambush Seth’s convoy outside St. Augustine's cemetery."
Angelo’s eyes flared with sudden, triumphant hope. "Attempted?"
"The lead vehicle was a remote-navigated decoy," Fiona revealed smoothly. "When Victor’s men stepped into the road to inspect the wreckage, Vane’s heavy unit surrounded them. Victor Dane is currently in federal custody, along with three of your primary lieutenants, facing terrorism and conspiracy charges."
Angelo went completely pale. The gun beneath the table trembled in his hand. "No... no, that's impossible! Victor had thirty men—"
"And at ten-twenty-five," Fiona continued calmly, opening her leather folder, "the Department of Justice executed an international freeze order on Aegis Holdings in the Cayman Islands. Eleven million dollars in stolen funds have been restored to the Basil corporate accounts."
She looked up, her hazel eyes locking onto Angelo's terrified face with absolute, crushing dominance.
"You have no money, Angelo," Fiona whispered. "You have no soldiers. And the men sitting at your table from New York are currently realizing that you sold them a fantasy."
The senior New York boss stood up violently, looking at Angelo with pure, murderous rage. "Angelo! You told us the kid was dead and the accounts were secure! You set us up!"
"No! Wait! She's lying!" Angelo screamed, his composure completely shattering. He raised his pistol, aiming it directly at Fiona’s chest. "I'll kill you, you fat bitch! I'll kill you right here!"
Fiona didn't flinch. She didn't scream. She didn't even step back.
She simply stood her ground, her broad, majestic frame looking entirely unshakeable.
Before Angelo could pull the trigger, the massive stained-glass windows along the east wall of the ballroom shattered inward in an explosion of sparkling glass and rain.
Four tactical cables dropped from the ceiling.
Seth Basil burst through the shattered window, swinging into the room like an angry god of vengeance. He hit the floor in a low roll, drawing his weapon in a single, fluid movement, and fired two precise shots before his feet even settled.
BANG. BANG.
Angelo screamed as both of his knees shattered, dropping him helplessly to the floor, his pistol skidding harmlessly across the marble toward Fiona’s feet.
Tactical officers in full body armor poured through the broken windows and side entrances, securing the New York bosses and slamming them against the tables in seconds.
Seth stood up, his suit soaked in rain, his platinum hair damp, his eyes burning with a dark, wild fury as he scanned the room.
He didn't look at the fallen enemy. He didn't look at the federal officers securing the scene.
He ran straight to Fiona.
He grabbed her by the shoulders, his broad hands shaking as he checked her face, her neck, her arms. "Are you hit? Did he touch you? Fiona, talk to me!"
Fiona reached up, placing her hand gently over his heart, feeling it hammering like a trapped beast against his ribs.
"I am perfectly fine, Seth," Fiona said softly, a warm, radiant smile illuminating her face. "You arrived right on schedule."
Seth pulled her into his arms with a sudden, fierce force that lifted her feet off the floor, burying his face in her neck, holding her so tightly that the velvet of her dress crushed against his tactical vest.

"Don't ever do that again," Seth growled softly, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Don't ever stand in front of a gun for me again."
"I told you, Seth," Fiona murmured into his ear, her thick arms wrapping securely around his neck. "I am not a helpless bride. I am your wife."
