Chapter 8 - Collapse of the Golden Child

The entire courtroom erupted into absolute pandemonium.
Belle jumped to her feet, knocking her designer handbag off the wooden pew. Loose lipsticks, compact mirrors, and makeup brushes scattered across the floor with loud plastic clatters.
"She’s lying! He’s lying!" Belle screamed, her face contorting with a rage so sudden and ugly that the court bailiff instinctively stepped between her and the bar. "Mom told me she wouldn't check the serial numbers! Mom said it was just a pencil!"
"Belle, shut your mouth!" Eleanor screamed from the witness stand, leaping out of her chair and smashing her fist against the wooden partition. "Shut up, you stupid girl! Shut up!"
"Bailiffs! Maintain order!" Judge Morrison’s gavel came down with three explosive cracks that sounded like gunshots in the high-ceilinged room. "Silence in this courtroom immediately, or I will clear the gallery and hold every single person in contempt!"
Two armed sheriff's deputies moved in on Belle, flanking her against the wooden bench. Belle was hyperventilating, her eyes wild, her hands clutching at her hair. The pristine, elegant illusion of the golden daughter was shattered beyond repair; in its place stood a terrified, caught predator.
On the witness stand, Eleanor’s chest was heaving. Her manicured hands gripped the rail so hard the knuckles were chalk white. She looked down at Marcus, then at District Attorney Miller, who had not moved a single inch from her table.
"Karen," Eleanor gasped, her voice desperate, stripped of all its high-society veneer. "Karen, we’ve known each other for years. My husband funded your first campaign! You cannot let this defense hack pull a stunt like this in your courtroom!"
Karen Miller stood up slowly. Her expression was like carved granite.
"Mrs. Vance," Miller said, her voice cutting through the remaining whispers in the room with absolute, surgical precision. "The only person pulling a stunt here was you, when you filed a falsified sworn deposition with the Briarcliff Police Department. And when you sat on that stand, swore an oath to God, and lied to the State of New York."
Miller turned to the bench and addressed Judge Morrison.
"Your Honor, based upon the new physical evidence, the chain-of-custody documentation, and the medical examiner’s conclusive trajectory report, the State of New York moves to formally dismiss all charges against Laurel Vance with extreme prejudice."
Judge Morrison looked at Miller, then looked down at Eleanor, his face dark with fury.
"Motion granted," Morrison boomed, bringing his gavel down once. "All charges against Laurel Vance are dismissed with prejudice. Her record in this matter is ordered expunged immediately."
Laurel, sitting at the defense table, buried her face in her trembling hands. A single, ragged sob tore through her throat—not of pain, but of the sheer, unbearable weight of terror suddenly lifting from her chest. Elena immediately wrapped an arm around Laurel's shoulders, holding her steady.
"However," Judge Morrison’s voice deepened, rumbling across the courtroom like distant thunder, "this court is not adjourned."
Morrison turned his cold, furious glare directly upon Eleanor Vance, who was shrinking back into the witness chair.
"Eleanor Vance, you have brazenly, openly, and maliciously committed aggravated perjury under oath before this court. You have knowingly fabricated evidence to orchestrate the false prosecution of a citizen."
Morrison turned to the deputies standing by the rail. "Deputies, take Eleanor Vance into immediate custody. Remand without bail pending formal felony indictment for perjury, subornation of perjury, and filing a false instrument."
Eleanor’s face drained of every drop of color. "What?! You can't arrest me! Do you know who my family is?!"

"I know exactly who you are, madam," Judge Morrison said with venomous disgust. "You are a criminal in my courtroom. Handcuff her."
