Chapter 4 - The Rat in the House

Back on the frozen tarmac of the Boulder estate, the dust kicked up by the departing Vanguard tiltrotors slowly settled back into the pristine snow. Marcus Reynolds stood motionless for a long, agonizing minute, watching the blinking navigation lights of the aircraft vanish into the southern clouds until they were nothing more than distant stars.

The cold mountain air bit through his tailored wool coat, but he felt nothing. The interior of his chest felt hollowed out, scorched by the absolute devastation of his own past choices. He had everything power could buy—billions in assets, an untouchable corporate empire, absolute dominance over the underworld—and yet, in the span of a single afternoon, he had lost the only things that truly mattered: the woman he foolishly discarded and the four children he never knew existed.

"Boss," a low, gravelly voice broke through his reverie.

Marcus didn't turn around immediately. He recognized the voice. It belonged to Liam Vance, his chief of security operations—a man who had stood by his side through turf wars, assassination attempts, and corporate hostile takeovers for over a decade.

"Speak, Liam," Marcus said, his voice dead, devoid of its usual commanding authority.

"The perimeter sweep is complete," Liam reported, stepping up beside him. " Vanguard's tactical AI wiped our local servers before they left, but our backup offline mainframes in the bunker are intact. We've confirmed Dante Moretti entered through the private southern access gate—a gate that requires a Level-4 biometric override code."

Marcus finally turned his head. His dark eyes locked onto Liam with a terrifying, razor-sharp intensity.

Level-4 biometric override codes were restricted to exactly three people in the entire Reynolds organization: Marcus himself, Patricia (who was currently sitting in a holding cell awaiting federal transport), and...

"Level-4," Marcus whispered softly, stepping closer to Liam. "Only three people have that clearance, Liam."

Liam didn't flinch. He maintained his military posture, but a micro-expression—a slight tightening of the jaw muscles—betrayed him.

"Patricia must have leaked her credentials to the Morettis before we locked her down," Liam said smoothly.

Marcus stared at him for three agonizingly long seconds. Every instinct he had honed as a mafia boss began screaming at him. He thought back to Clara’s warning—Your house is rotted from the inside, Marcus. He thought about how precisely Dante Moretti timed his arrival right after the children were revealed.

"Patricia’s biometrics were revoked the moment she was detained three hours ago, Liam," Marcus said quietly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. "The override ping that opened the southern gate happened forty minutes ago. While we were standing in the foyer."

Liam’s eyes flickered just a fraction of a second too late.

In a blur of motion, Marcus drew his customized SIG Sauer P226 pistol from his shoulder holster, slamming the barrel directly under Liam’s chin with enough force to snap the man's head back.

The security guards stationed thirty yards away instantly raised their rifles, shouting out in alarm, "Boss! Hold your fire!"

"Stand down!" Marcus roared, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. He glared down at Liam, who stood frozen, the cold steel pressing against his throat.

"You've been feeding Moretti our operational routes for eighteen months, haven't you, Liam?" Marcus whispered, the betrayal burning a hole straight through his chest. "You sold us out. You gave Dante the timeline for today. You wanted the estate breached while my family was standing in the open."

Liam let out a dry, chilling laugh. The mask of loyalty dissolved, replaced by a bitter, distorted sneer.

"And why shouldn't I, Marcus?" Liam hissed, his voice trembling with years of suppressed resentment. "You sit on your throne in Colorado while the rest of us bleed in the streets. You treat your empire like a chess game and your men like pawns. Moretti offered me a seat at the table—a real seat, not just a paycheck."

Marcus didn't hesitate. He didn't waste time shouting or demanding more confessions.

With a cold, mechanical detachment, Marcus pulled the slide back slightly to verify the chamber, then lowered the gun just enough to pistol-whip Liam across the temple with bone-crushing force. Liam dropped instantly onto the snow, unconscious and bleeding profusely.

"Take him down to the sublevel interrogation cells," Marcus ordered, not even looking down as two guards rushed forward to drag Liam’s limp body away. "And wake up the corporate legal team. We’re going to war."
