Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Contract

The heavy darkness of my Lake Shore Drive penthouse felt cold, suffocating, and laced with pure venom. The dried blood on my suit cuff—left over from a brutally quiet dispute at the Chicago docks less than two hours ago—was nothing compared to the violent tempest roaring in my chest.

I was Roman Moretti. I was a man who controlled a shipping and logistics syndicate that spanned five ports, whose word was law in the underworld, and whose enemies died in dark alleys before sunrise. Yet inside my own twenty-million-dollar home, beneath the soaring glass ceilings and imported marble, my daughter was being forced to denounce her own self-worth, and my son was being trained to accept abuse as a necessity for survival.

Naomi’s fingers remained locked around my left wrist. Her grip was surprisingly strong for a woman who spent her days polishing silver and organizing the estate's domestic affairs. Her dark eyes were steady, reflecting no fear of the dangerous criminal standing beside her.

"Look at her, Roman," Naomi whispered, her breath barely touching my ear. "Look at the way Camille moves. She’s not afraid of you coming home. She’s waiting for it."

Through the gap in the library doors, I watched Camille Sloane. She wore a tailored crimson silk robe, her blonde hair arranged in effortless waves. She looked every bit the refined daughter of Patrick Sloane—the brutal kingpin whose political clout and port access I had sought to merge with my own empire through our impending engagement.

Camille picked up the little stuffed rabbit that my late wife, Isabella, had sewn by hand for Rosie just weeks before the cancer took her life. She held it over a lit candle on the side table, letting the heat singe the delicate fur.

"Tomorrow morning, Rosie," Camille said smoothly, her tone sickeningly gentle. "You will tell your father that you accidentally lost this toy. If you shed a single tear, I’ll tell him you broke your mother's glass vase on purpose."

Rosie’s tiny body trembled. Tears spilled down her pale cheeks, but she squeezed her eyes shut and pressed her lips together to keep from making a sound. Beside her, eight-year-old Jack stood stiffly, a faint red welt already blooming on his left cheek where Camille had struck him moments before.

"If I go through that door right now," I said, my voice dropping into a register so low and terrifying that the air in the hallway seemed to freeze, "I will snap her neck before she can scream."

"And that is precisely what she and Arthur Velez are counting on," Naomi countered, pulling me two steps backward into the shadows of the piano nook. "Camille has two security guards stationed in the lobby downstairs—men hired directly from her father’s inner circle. The moment you lay a hand on her, she triggers an emergency silent panic button on her wrist. The guards come up. They find a frantic, bruised fiancée and a dangerous crime lord covered in dockland blood, threatening his children."

I narrowed my eyes at her. "And Arthur?"

"Arthur Velez has already drafted the court petitions," Naomi revealed, her voice dropping lower. "The claim will state that the trauma of losing Isabella has made you unstable, violent, and unfit to retain legal custody. Under the pre-nuptial agreement Arthur urged you to sign last month, Camille becomes the temporary legal guardian of your children and trustee of the Moretti estate if you are arrested or incapacitated."

A chill far colder than the winter wind blowing off Lake Michigan ran down my spine.

Arthur Velez had been my primary legal counsel and family friend for ten years. He sat at my dinner table. He had toasted to my late wife’s memory. He knew every weakness, every shell company, and every secret I possessed.

"How long have you known about Arthur?" I asked Naomi, my hand slowly coming off the grip of the 9mm pistol concealed beneath my jacket.

"Six weeks," Naomi replied evenly. "When I noticed Arthur meeting privately with Camille in the kitchen while you were in New York, I started monitoring the estate's private network. I found encrypted files Arthur transferred from your legal vault. Roman... they aren't just trying to take your children to control your money. They are planning to put you away permanently."

"Patrick Sloane wants my port routes," I muttered, the pieces of the grand puzzle instantly locking into place. "He couldn't take them by force without triggering a syndicate war, so he sent his daughter to execute a quiet coup from inside my home."

"Yes," Naomi said. "And if you break tonight, they win everything."

In the library, Camille tossed the burnt stuffed rabbit into the wastebasket, dusted off her hands, and looked at Jack and Rosie.

"Go to your rooms," Camille commanded softly. "Wash your faces. If your father comes home, you are asleep. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Camille," Jack said, his voice flat, broken, and hollow. He took his little sister’s hand and led her quietly out through the secondary door toward the bedroom wing.

Camille smiled to herself, picked up her wine glass, and strolled out toward the master suite, completely unaware that the man whose life she was trying to dismantle had seen every second of her cruelty.

I stood in the dark corridor, my heart bleeding for my children, my soul burning with an ancient, terrifying wrath. I turned to Naomi, looking at her with a newfound, sharp focus.

"You're not just a housekeeper, are you, Naomi?" I asked quietly.

Naomi looked up at me, her eyes unblinking. "My real name is Naomi Wells. Eight years ago, Patrick Sloane destroyed my family's shipping firm and drove my father to suicide. I’ve spent three years waiting for the right moment to pull the foundation out from beneath his throne."

She held out her hand.

May you like

"You have the muscle, Roman," Naomi said firmly. "I have the evidence. Help me destroy the Sloanes, and I will make sure your children are safe forever."

I reached out and grasped her hand, making a quiet, binding vow in the dark. "Tomorrow, the game changes."
