Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

The morning sun filtered through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Mercer Tech headquarters on Michigan Avenue.

I sat at the head of the long glass conference table in the executive board suite. I was wearing a tailored navy suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun, showing no trace of the humiliation from the night before.

Across the table sat seven members of the board of directors. Sitting in the corner, flanked by his newly hired defense attorney, was Daniel.

He looked haggard. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and he no longer had the confident, swaggering demeanor of a Chief Operating Officer. After being released on fifty thousand dollars bail at three in the morning—funded by his mother selling her gold jewelry—he had been forced to attend this emergency board meeting.

"Members of the board," I began, my voice clear and carrying total authority. "You have all received the forensic audit report prepared by Sterling & Mercer Law Group over the past forty-eight hours."

A elder director, Harrison Vance (no relation to Daniel), adjusted his reading glasses and shook his head in disgust. "Claire, this is appalling. Over three hundred thousand dollars redirected through unauthorized vendor accounts over eighteen months?"

"Three hundred and forty-two thousand, to be precise, Harrison," I corrected smoothly. "In addition to forging my signature on corporate credit lines, Mr. Vance attempted to sell three of our core patent applications to our direct competitor, Nexus Dynamics, in exchange for a five-million-dollar finder's fee deposited into an offshore account."

Gasps filled the boardroom.

Daniel slammed his hands on the table. "That's a lie! I was negotiating a strategic partnership! I was trying to save this company while Claire was hiding in her lab!"

"Silence, Daniel," Harrison barked. "We have the email transcripts provided by the federal cyber-crimes unit. You were selling out our intellectual property to pay off your personal gambling debts at the Venetian in Las Vegas!"

Daniel’s defense lawyer leaned over, whispering frantically in Daniel’s ear, forcing him back down into his seat.

"As Chief Executive Officer and ninety-percent shareholder," I continued, sliding a formal resolution across the glass table, "I am calling for an immediate vote to strip Daniel Vance of all executive titles, revoke his stock options under the morality clause of his executive contract, and authorize our legal team to file full criminal charges for corporate embezzlement and industrial espionage."

"I second the motion," Harrison said immediately.

"All in favor?" I asked.

Every hand around the table went up instantly.

Daniel sat frozen as the board secretary recorded the unanimous vote. His career in the technology sector, built entirely on my hard work and his smooth-talking lies, was vaporized in less than three minutes.

"Mr. Vance," Harrison said cold, looking down at him. "You have fifteen minutes to vacate the building under security escort. If you set foot on Mercer Tech property again, you will be arrested for criminal trespass."

Daniel stood up slowly. He looked at me across the long table, his eyes burning with a dangerous, toxic hatred.

"You think you've won, Claire?" Daniel spat, his voice trembling with venom. "You think you can just erase eleven years of my life? My mother and I built your social status! Without us, you're just a nerdy orphan girl with a computer degree!"

"I built this company, Daniel," I replied calmly, looking him dead in the eye. "You were just the expensive leech I forgot to remove. Security, show him out."

Two broad-shouldered guards stepped forward, grabbing Daniel by his arms and marching him backward out of the executive suite.
