Chapter 4 - Unveiling the Viper

“Mother!” Richard shouted, panicking now as Detective Hayes grabbed his left arm and wrenched it behind his back. “Mother, do something! Call Uncle Robert!”

“Robert was removed from the judicial oversight committee last Tuesday,” Daniel Vance remarked casually, glancing up from his tablet. “A forensic audit revealed twenty-two wire transfers from Bennett Construction shell companies to his personal accounts. The state attorney general will be announcing the grand jury indictments at two o'clock.”

Patricia Bennett let out a sharp, choked shriek, dropping her champagne glass. It shattered against the flagstones, spraying sparkling wine across the hem of her expensive gown.

“You monster!” Patricia spat, glaring at me with raw hatred. “We welcomed Emily! We gave her a place in a historic lineage! She was nothing—just a spoiled girl with an overbearing mother!”

I looked down at Patricia with cold pity. “You raised a coward who beats women behind closed doors because he knows he could never earn respect in the daylight. Your lineage ends in a bankruptcy court and a state penitentiary.”

“Get off me!” Richard snarled, thrashing against Detective Hayes’ grip. The second officer grabbed his other arm, forcing him down toward the altar rail. The sharp click of steel handcuffs ratcheting shut cut through the sanctuary like a gunshot.

“Richard Bennett,” Hayes recited, pushing him down firmly. “You are under arrest for felony domestic battery, assault, and witness intimidation.”

Emily pulled away from my chest slightly, looking at Richard pinned against the velvet cushions of the communion rail.

Her tears had stopped.

She reached up with both hands, took hold of the delicate, pearl-embroidered veil pinned to her hair, and pulled. The hairpins dragged against her scalp, but she didn't wince. With one clean motion, she tore the veil free and dropped it onto the floor.

Then, she slipped the three-carat diamond engagement ring off her finger.

Richard looked up, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild and hateful. “Emily! Don't you dare! If you walk away now, you have nothing! You hear me? Nothing!”

Emily walked down the altar steps until she stood directly above him.

“I had nothing the day I agreed to marry you,” she said, her voice shaking at first, then steadying into pure steel. “You told me no one would believe me. You told me my mother didn't care about me anymore.”

She opened her palm. The diamond ring fell, bouncing off Richard’s shoulder before rolling into the drain of the baptismal font.

“You were wrong about everything,” Emily whispered.

Richard lunged upward, his teeth bared, but the two officers slammed him back against the rail. “You bitch! You think your mother can protect you forever? The second I make bail—”

“You aren't making bail, Richard,” Detective Hayes said, hauling him to his feet with an unforgiving jerk. “The magistrate reviewed the penthouse security footage Vance delivered an hour ago. The footage from the hallway, showing you dragging Miss Carter by her hair back into the apartment. The judge issued a no-bail hold pending formal arraignment.”

Richard’s face drained of color. The arrogance that had sustained him his entire life collapsed, leaving only the hollow, pathetic frame of a bully cornered by consequences.

“Dad?” Richard cried, his voice shrinking into a whimpering plea. “Dad, help me!”

Arthur Bennett stood frozen in the center aisle, the default notice shaking violently in his hands. He looked from his handcuffed son to the legal documents, his chest heaving, his empire turning to dust before his eyes.
