Chapter 5 - The Gates of Falmouth

At 4:45 AM, the convoy arrived at the perimeter of The Pines Youth Agriculture Facility.

The storm was howling through the tall pine trees, casting long, eerie shadows across the muddy, unpaved road. The high chain-link fence was topped with rusted razor wire, and a single floodlight illuminated a heavy steel gate secured with a thick iron chain.

Marcus Vance leaned forward from the driver's seat. "Gate is locked, Mr. Whitmore. No guards visible in the watch shack—they're likely inside the main bunkhouse avoiding the rain."

"Drive through it," Daniel ordered without hesitation.

"Copy that, sir," Marcus grinned.

The lead heavy-duty armored SUV accelerated, its reinforced steel bull-bar smashing directly into the center of the steel gate. The iron chain snapped with a loud, metallic crack, and the gate burst open, sending sparks and torn wire flying into the mud.

The three SUVs roared onto the gravel driveway, surrounding the main wooden bunkhouse with their high-beam floodlights blinding the windows.

Inside the bunkhouse, shouting began immediately.

Three men in yellow rain jackets burst out of the front door, one of them brandishing a heavy shot-gun.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" Detective Brooks’ voice boomed through her vehicle's loudspeaker as six armed federal agents and Marcus’s tactical team spilled out of the SUVs, their weapons trained directly on the guards.

The guard holding the shotgun took one look at the laser sights painting his chest, dropped the weapon into the mud, and threw his hands high into the air. The other two guards immediately collapsed to their knees, surrendering without firing a single shot.

Daniel slammed his door open and marched straight past the kneeling guards toward the heavy oak door of the main dormitory.

He kicked the door open with his heavy leather boot.

The inside of the bunkhouse smelled of woodsmoke, wet wool, and damp earth. Row upon row of metal cot frames lined the unheated room. Fifteen young boys were sitting up in their cots, their eyes wide with terror and confusion under the dim yellow lightbulbs.

"Leo!" Daniel shouted, his voice echoing through the long room. "Is there a Leo here?"

Near the far corner of the room, a tall, slender eleven-year-old boy stood up from his cot. He had dark hair, pale skin, and a severe bruise across his jaw, but his eyes possessed the exact same fierce, protective blue spark that Daniel had seen in Lily's eyes on the shoulder of I-75.

Leo stepped in front of a smaller boy sitting on the cot beside him, putting his thin body between the child and the strangers.

"Who wants to know?" Leo demanded, his voice cracking with defensive anger.

Daniel walked slowly down the aisle between the cots, dropping to one knee five feet away from the boy. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the small, cracked plastic toy car with the missing wheel.

He held it out in the palm of his hand.

Leo stopped breathing. His eyes darted from the toy car to Daniel's face.

"Lily?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling violently. "Where... where did you get that? Is she okay? Where is my sister?"

A warm, tearful smile broke across Daniel’s face.

"Lily is safe, Leo," Daniel said gently. "She's at the hospital in Dayton. She has a pink cast on her arm, Maddie is tucked into a warm crib, and she sent me to bring you home."

May you like

Leo stared at the toy car, then covered his face with his dirty hands and broke into deep, heavy sobs.

Daniel stood up, stepped forward, and pulled the eleven-year-old boy into a strong, protective embrace, letting the child cry against his coat until the dawn light began to break over the Kentucky hills.
