Chapter 9 - The Freefall

The world outside the town car dissolved into a dizzying blur of bright, flashing headlights, churning black mud, and dark, towering pine trees. The violent impact of the armored SUV had shattered the rear windshield into a million glittering diamond shards that rained down across the cabin.
“Hold on!” Rico roared, his voice cutting through the chaos with absolute, unshakeable authority.
With fast, hard, and decisive movements, Rico braced his arms against the dashboard, fighting the spinning steering wheel with brute force to keep the vehicle from rolling over. Beside him, Dante cursed fiercely, his massive hands working the emergency brake and shifting gears to stabilize their trajectory as they careened off the edge of the highway.
The town car plunged down the steep, muddy embankment, tearing through dense brush and small saplings before crashing heavily toward the dark, rushing waters of the river below.
Inside the back seat, the G-force pressed Clara hard against the leather seat. Despite the terrifying freefall, her primary instinct did not flicker for a second. With fierce, protective speed, she threw her body entirely over three-year-old Leo, wrapping her arms tightly around the toddler and shielding his head against her chest. Leo cried out in fright, burying his face into her jacket as the car bounced violently over a rocky outcrop.
CRASH!
The town car finally slammed to a violent halt against a thick cluster of weeping willows right at the muddy riverbank, the front hood hissing as steam billowed up into the night air.
Silence descended upon the cabin, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the cooling engine and the sound of the nearby river rushing past.
For a terrifying second, no one moved. Then, Rico kicked his door open with a sharp, explosive bang, the heavy metal door tearing away half-swamped vines. He scrambled out into the mud, his dark suit soaked and stained, his eyes instantly locking onto the back seat.
“Leo! Clara!” Rico shouted, his voice cracking with a raw, buried vulnerability that he never showed to the underworld.
Dante crawled out from the front passenger window, his heavy weapon drawn and ready, scanning the dark tree line with predatory focus.
Inside the back seat, Clara slowly lifted her head. Her fair skin was smeared with mud, and a small scratch bled near her temple, but her arms remained securely locked around the boy. She looked down at Leo. The toddler blinked, unhurt, his blue eyes wide with shock as he clutched his teddy bear tightly.
“We’re... we’re okay,” Clara gasped, her voice trembling as she helped slide the boy out through the shattered rear window straight into Rico’s outstretched arms.
Rico pulled his son close to his chest, burying his face in the boy’s hair for a brief, desperate fraction of a second before his expression hardened back into cold, lethal steel. He handed Leo to Dante.
“Take the boy up the ridge. Find the secondary extraction unit,” Rico commanded sharply.
“Boss, I’m not leaving you down here alone with her,” Dante protested, his massive frame tensing.
“That’s an order, Dante! Move!” Rico barked, raising his hand with absolute finality.
Dante hesitated for half a heartbeat, then clutched Leo tightly and sprinted up the steep muddy embankment into the dark forest.
Rico turned his attention back to the car. Clara was struggling to pull her foot free from where it was wedged beneath the crushed floor mat. Before she could free herself, Rico reached inside with frightening speed, his strong hands gripping her waist and hauling her effortlessly out of the wrecked vehicle, setting her down firmly on the muddy riverbank.
She stumbled, catching her balance against his chest. For a moment, their eyes locked. The cinematic moonlight cut through the canopy above, illuminating the stark tension between them.
“You saved him,” Rico said softly, his voice dangerously low, stripped of its mafia facade. “Just like you did three years ago.”
Clara breathed heavily, looking up at him with tears welling in her eyes. “Rico... I don't remember. I swear to you, I don't remember stealing anything. But whoever is hunting us down won't stop until—"
Before she could finish her sentence, a red laser sight blinked sharply across Rico’s chest.
From the top of the embankment, a cold, distorted voice echoed through the trees via a hidden tactical loudspeaker:
“Target vehicle disabled. Secure the ledger before the boss gets out alive.”
Heavy combat boots crunched down the muddy slope as a dozen heavily armed operatives emerged from the fog, their automatic rifles leveled straight at Rico and Clara.

Rico didn't flinch. With lightning speed, he stepped in front of Clara, pulling her behind his broad frame as he drew his custom firearm once more. But as his finger brushed the trigger, a sharp click echoed from behind them.
Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as a cold metallic barrel pressed firmly against the back of her own neck.
