Chapter 9 - The Choice to Stay

Six months later.
The grand courtyard of the Lake Geneva estate was filled with warm autumn sunlight, golden leaves falling gently over the stone pavers where I had once sat flat on my butt with four gallons of soapy water.
Today, there were no buckets. No armed guards standing in shadows. No fear.
Over two hundred guests sat in elegant white wooden rows set up across the manicured lawn—local community leaders, staff members from the animal sanctuary, Rosa, Leo, and rescue teams from across the state.
Near the stone archway stood a simple altar made of dark cedar, decorated with white roses and autumn greenery.
I walked down the aisle on the arm of Leo, who had insisted on walking me down in place of the family I had lost long ago. I wore a lace dress that draped softly over my shoulders, my hair styled in loose, warm curls, holding a bouquet of wild white lilies.
At the end of the aisle stood Matteo.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking impossibly handsome, his tall frame illuminated by the golden afternoon light. Beside him stood Bruno, wearing a simple white collar decorated with a small green laurel wreath, sitting perfectly still as the official ring bearer.
When my eyes met Matteo’s, my heart swelled with a happiness so vast, so complete, that every dark memory of my past dissolved like mist in the morning sun.
Leo handed my hand to Matteo with a proud, tight nod.
Matteo took my hand in his, bringing my knuckles to his lips, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against my skin before holding both of my hands between his.
“You look breathtaking, Clara,” Matteo whispered, his voice rich with emotion.
“And you look like a man who isn't giving any orders today,” I teased softly, my eyes shining.
Matteo chuckled, a warm, resonant sound that made the guests smile gently.
The minister stepped forward, his voice clear and resonant across the quiet courtyard.
“We are gathered here today to unite two people who found each other not in ease, but in courage,” the minister began. “Love is not a cage to hold a soul, nor a debt to be collected. It is a choice made freely, every single day.”
When it came time for our vows, Matteo looked directly into my eyes, holding my hands firmly in his.
“Clara,” Matteo said, his voice deep and unwavering. “I spent my life building walls to keep the world out. You walked onto this estate with soapy water, a split shoe, and a heart brave enough to stand up to a beast no one else could touch. You didn't just break my walls—you taught me how to live behind them. I promise to honor your voice, respect your choices, and stand beside you as your equal for all the days of my life.”
Tears overflowed my eyes, sparkling like diamonds on my cheeks as I squeezed his hands tightly.
“Matteo,” I said, my voice strong and clear. “I spent fourteen years believing I was weak because I couldn't stop people from controlling me. You didn't save me by fighting my battles; you saved me by giving me the space to find my own strength. I choose you today—not out of need, not out of fear, but out of a love that belongs entirely to us.”
Bruno nudged his snout against Matteo’s leg, holding up his collar where two gold bands rested on a red ribbon.
Matteo untied the rings with a smile, slipping the band onto my finger, while I slipped mine onto his.
“By the power vested in me,” the minister announced, a broad smile on his face, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Matteo, you may kiss your bride.”
Matteo didn't pull me aggressively. He wrapped his strong arms gently around my waist, lifting me slightly off my feet, and brought his lips down onto mine in a deep, passionate, and breathtaking kiss that sealed our promise forever.
The entire courtyard erupted into thunderous applause, cheers, and joyful whistling.
Bruno let out a loud, triumphant bark, leaping onto his hind legs to rest his paws lightly against Matteo’s shoulder, joining our embrace as the guests laughed and cheered louder.
We turned to face our friends, our staff, and our community—hand in hand, standing together as true partners.
Later that evening, as the sun set over the lake, painting the sky in deep shades of purple, orange, and gold, Matteo and I walked hand in hand down the wooden pier behind the main house.
Bruno trotted ahead of us, sniffing at the cool water, his tail wagging lazily.
I leaned my head against Matteo’s arm, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath his wool jacket.
“What are you thinking about, Mrs. Moretti?” Matteo asked softly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his side.
I looked back at the grand estate lit up with warm golden lights, then looked over at the animal sanctuary where three new rescue dogs were sleeping peacefully in warm, clean runs.
“I’m thinking about the first day I met you,” I smiled, looking up into his dark, beautiful eyes. “When I was sitting flat on my butt in the snow, soaking wet, expecting to be fired.”
Matteo smiled, kissing the top of my head gently. “And instead, you made a killer dog choose you.”
I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his waist, looking up into the face of the man I loved.

“He didn't just choose me, Matteo,” I whispered softly. “He showed me how to choose myself.”
Matteo held me tight as the stars began to glitter above the quiet waters of Lake Geneva, holding the woman who had conquered his heart, redeemed his life, and built a home where love was always a choice freely made.
