Chapter 4 - The Venom of Selina Moretti

Thirty miles away in the affluent suburban neighborhood of Oak Park, the gilded glass doors of L'Elegance Boutique were shattered not by storm winds, but by the cold reality of federal law enforcement.

Selina Moretti sat inside her lavish private office behind the boutique, sipping an espresso from an porcelain cup, admiring the four-thousand-dollar Omega watch her son had gifted her three nights ago. She was already planning her next vacation to Saint-Tropez, fully convinced that Rowan would handle his "dramatic" wife and bring her back into line as usual.

The door to her office slammed open.

Three agents from the Financial Crimes Unit, flanked by two armed federal marshals, stepped into the marble-floored showroom.

"Selina Moretti?" the lead agent announced, holding up an official federal search warrant. "We are executing a court order to freeze all operational accounts, inventory, and physical real estate associated with L'Elegance Boutique pursuant to an ongoing grand larceny and money laundering investigation."

Selina dropped her espresso cup, the dark liquid splashing over her white tweed jacket. "What is the meaning of this insolence?!" she shrieked, standing up instantly. "Do you know who I am?! My son is a senior partner at Westlake Capital! I will have you all fired by noon!"

"Your son, Rowan Moretti, was taken into police custody forty-five minutes ago at St. Jude's Hospital," the agent replied coldly, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "And he has already been formally charged with embezzling over three hundred thousand dollars, which was deposited directly into this business's merchant accounts."

Selina’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in absolute horror. "No... no, that's impossible! Rowan told me the money came from his annual performance bonuses!"

"You can explain that to the grand jury, Mrs. Moretti," the agent said, stepping around the glass desk. "Hands behind your back."

Four hours later, the news hit every major local television channel and social media outlet across Chicago: "Senior Analyst Arrested in $300k Embezzlement Scheme; Mother's Luxury Boutique Seized in Sterling Global Buyout."

In my hospital suite, the afternoon sun cast a warm golden light across the hardwood floor. My phone, sitting on the bedside table, began buzzing violently. The caller ID displayed a number I had memorized over three painful years of marriage: Selina Moretti.

I picked up the phone, tapped the speaker button, and set it back down.

"Phoebe! You miserable, spiteful little viper!" Selina’s voice shrieked through the speaker, distorted by rage and panic. "What have you done to my son?! What have you done to my business?!"

"Hello, Selina," I said smoothly, pouring myself a glass of fresh water from the pitcher. "I see you managed to post bail."

"You set Rowan up!" she screamed, her breath hitching wildly. "You put him in a jail cell! You sent federal agents to my boutique! He is the father of your child! How could you be so evil?!"

"Your son left me bleeding and screaming in labor to eat your birthday cake, Selina," I replied, my voice dangerously soft. "He laughed at me on the phone while my contractions were four minutes apart. You told him that women have been giving birth for thousands of years and that I should 'call a cab.'"

"It was a joke! A joke!" Selina cried out, her arrogance finally cracking into desperate sobbing. "You can't ruin our lives over a joke! Rowan is a good boy! He made a mistake because he wanted to give his mother a nice life! You have to drop the charges!"

"I didn't file the charges, Selina," I said calmly. "The District Attorney filed them based on the forensic evidence I uncovered. And as for your boutique... well, my father's holding company bought the building's lease two hours ago. You have until five o'clock tomorrow to clear out your personal items before the locks are changed."

"Your father?!" Selina gasped, her voice dropping an octave into pure shock. "Your father is a nobody! He’s a retired hardware clerk!"

"My father is Gideon Sterling, Selina," I said, letting the words hang in the air like heavy iron. "The man whose company owns your son's employer, your boutique's building, and the firm representing your bank's foreclosures."

A suffocating, absolute silence fell over the phone line. I could hear Selina’s ragged, terrified breathing as the realization crashed over her like a tidal wave—the quiet, unassuming daughter-in-law she had spent three years belittling was the sole heiress to a multi-billion-dollar empire.

"G-Gideon... Sterling?" Selina whispered, her voice trembling so hard she could barely articulate the syllables. "Phoebe... please... we're family..."

May you like

"We were never family, Selina," I said firmly. "You were just a lesson I had to learn. Enjoy your watch."

I clicked the red end-call button, blocked her number permanently, and picked up my sleeping son, holding him warm and safe against my heart.
